Joy Reid slams Donald Trump over empty promises on IVF, claims he's using issue to 'stay out of prison'
WASHINGTON, DC: MSNBC host Joy Reid claimed former president and GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump has backed in-vitro fertilization (IVF) treatments and promised that will be paid for by the government in a desperate ploy to "stay out of prison" during a panel discussion on the network on Friday, August 30.
Her comments come at a time when Trump is under fire from both conservatives and liberals for flip-flopping on his stance regarding access to reproductive healthcare. He withdrew his support of a ballot referendum to expand abortion access in Florida, 24 hours after suggesting that he would back it, on Friday.
The previous day, he promised universal coverage of IVF for women, even when GOP senators, including his running mate JD Vance, defeated a bill earlier in the summer with a similar provision.
Joey Reid shreds Donald Trump for his hollow promises about IVF
Bringing up Donald Trump's recent campaign promise about IVF, Joy Reid argued that the former president should be judged by voters similar to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
Both men are political heavyweights navigating legal troubles, shared Mediaite. Netanyahu was indicted back in 2020 on charges of fraud, bribery, and more.
The conservative leader reportedly has delayed proceedings of his cases for years, citing his leadership in Israel's bombing of Gaza to defeat Hamas.
Trump was convicted on 34 counts of felony earlier this year for falsifying business records and is currently awaiting sentencing, which is scheduled for September 18.
"People need to start thinking about Donald Trump the way they think about Benjamin Netanyahu who is the equivalent of him in Israel, who will do whatever his far-right backers want, including killing a lot of people in Gaza,” Reid stated on her show. "He, too, is trying to stay out of prison,”
Trump stated at a Michigan rally that he would push for a policy in his second term mandating the government or the health insurance companies to pay for IVF treatments even as it is opposed by some pro-life conservatives.
“This man is not a policy wonk. He didn’t do policy in his first term. He just let The Heritage Foundation and whatever the think tankers do what they would think was popular,” Reid said, dismissing Trump's support as empty.
"He doesn’t want to go to prison. He would spend the rest of his life in prison," she added.
Donald Trump slammed online for making empty promises
Netizens took to the comments section of the Mediaite article and sided with Joy Reid. They mocked Trump for making campaign promises without convictions.
"Does ANYBODY believe Trump's promises? Trump will say and do anything to steal power," wrote one reader.
"Trump's entire campaign is a 'Stay Out of Prison' gimmick," stated another.
"Everything Trump is doing is trying to stay out of jail. Trump finally facing consequences in his twilight years," commented one person.
"Komrade Trump will make you pay for someone else’s IVF. Socialism!" added another.
"Slowly and steadily his desperation is increasing," wrote one individual.
