Julia Roberts reflects on 'heartbreaking' loss of Matthew Perry's untimely death that coincided with her birthday

LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Julia Roberts has opened up about the sudden death of Matthew Perry which she described as "heartbreaking."

"The sudden passing of anybody so young is heartbreaking," The 'Notting Hill' actress said of the 'Friends' star.

"I think that, you know, it just helps all of us just appreciate what we have and to keep going in a positive way as best we can," she added.

Julia Roberts speaks about her brief stint on 'Friends'

In an interview with ET, Roberts reminisced about her time on 'Friends' and expressed her heartfelt reaction to Perry's sudden death which tragically coincided with her birthday.

Speaking about her experience on the sitcom in which she portrayed the childhood classmate of Perry's character, Chandler Bing, Roberts said, "All good thoughts and feelings."

"They were all so welcoming to me as just a kind of a one-off character and it was a really fun time," she said of guest starring in the 1996 episode 'The One After the Super Bowl.'

Matthew Perry and Julia Roberts were engaged in a 'three-month-long-courtship'

In his 2022 memoir 'Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing', Perry wrote about his relationship with Roberts off camera as he stated that they were engaged in a "three-month-long courtship" in the 90s.

"I sent her three dozen red roses and the card read: 'The only thing more exciting than the prospect of you doing the show is that I finally have an excuse to send you flowers,'" Perry shared about his romance with Roberts which began when she was considering her guest appearance in the sitcom.

"Three or four times a day I would sit by my fax machine and watch the piece of paper slowly revealing her next missive," the 'Fools Rush In' actor wrote.

"I was so excited that some nights I would find myself out at some party sharing a flirtatious exchange with an attractive woman and cut the conversation short so I could race home and see if a new fax had arrived," he continued.

Perry further praised the 'Eat Pray Love' actress for her intellect as he wrote, "It was like she was placed on this planet to make the world smile, and now, in particular, me. I was grinning like some 15-year-old on his first date."

The '17 Again' actor revealed that they were already dating by the time they filmed Roberts's episode and he also mentioned the actress jokingly confirming their romance during her appearance in 'The Late Show With David Letterman' in 1996.
