In an emotional Instagram video, Kaley Cuoco, 38, detailed the circumstances that led to the rehoming of her long-time companion. Shirley, whom Cuoco had cared for since the dog was six weeks old, began having severe conflicts with her fiance Tom Pelphrey’s German Shepherd, Blue.
“Most of you know I had (Shirley) for many, many, many years,” said the actress.
Cuoco continued, “All of a sudden, you kind of stopped seeing her, and I started to get a lot of questions as to where she was, because it’s very unlike me to just stop posting about a dog that I’ve had since she was 6 weeks old.”

“Long story short, she’s a very special dog to me, as you all know, and when the love of my life came into my life, Tom, who is also a mega dog lover moved across the country with his beautiful German Shepherd, Blue, a couple years ago, unfortunately, Blue and Shirley started getting into some mega fights," Cuoco shared. However, the introduction of the two dogs led to escalating aggression.
“Shirley was determined to kill Blue,” Cuoco said. “I loved her so much, but I was really scared. I didn’t want something really bad to happen or for a person to accidentally get hurt.”
After consulting with her pet handler, Tony, and his wife Angie, Cuoco decided to rehome Shirley with them, where she would be in a safe and loving environment.
Kaley shared, “She got a very aggressive bone cancer that came on very quickly.” Kaley tearfully reflected on Shirley’s long life, saying, “She was almost 14 years old, which is an unbelievable life for a dog. And I just wanted to share her story and what we had to do.”

Though Cuoco emphasized that the decision was made with Shirley’s best interests at heart, the revelation sparked strong reactions on social media.
“Pets are for life, not until they become inconvenient,” one critic commented.
Others called, "Oh, poor Kaley Cuoco and her "excruciating decision" to rehome her dog. Maybe she should consider rehoming her fiance's pet instead since it seems to be causing all the drama. Sounds like a real-life soap opera playing out in her household!"

That poor dog has no idea why her long time family member ditched her," while another added, "You should be hurt and ashamed! You rehomed Shirley for a man! Poor thing. She didn’t know why you didn’t love her anymore. You are NOT an animal lover."
