WASHINGTON, DC: Vice President Kamala Harris confirmed running for the Democratic nomination for president after incumbent Joe Biden announced dropping out of the race and endorsing her in his stead, on Sunday, July 21.

Biden's announcement came amid growing concerns across the aisle regarding his mental acuity to hold the top office for another term. Support for Harris has poured in since Biden suspended his reelection campaign, including from former President Bill Clinton and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

Joe Biden's endorsement of Kamala Harris

The incumbent took to the social media platform (formerly Twitter) to express his support for Harris, writing, "My fellow Democrats, I have decided not to accept the nomination and to focus all my energies on my duties as President for the remainder of my term. My very first decision as the party nominee in 2020 was to pick Kamala Harris as my Vice President. And it’s been the best decision I’ve made."

"Today I want to offer my full support and endorsement for Kamala to be the nominee of our party this year. Democrats — it’s time to come together and beat Trump. Let’s do this."

Kamala Harris announces taking on Donald Trump

Shortly after Joe Biden made his announcement, Kamala Harris posted on X thanking the POTUS for his service to the United States. She also gratefully accepted Biden's endorsement and shared that she would do her utmost to be at the top of the Democratic ticket.

"On behalf of the American people, I thank Joe Biden for his extraordinary leadership as President of the United States and for his decades of service to our country," Harris wrote in her post.

"I am honored to have the President’s endorsement and my intention is to earn and win this nomination."

She added in a following tweet, "I will do everything in my power to unite the Democratic Party—and unite our nation—to defeat Donald Trump and his extreme Project 2025 agenda. If you’re with me, add a donation right now."

Clintons' endorsement of Kamala Harris

According to Fox News, Bill and Hillary Clinton shared a joint statement after Biden withdrew from the race, saying that the incumbent "has capped his extraordinary career of service with a Presidency that has lifted America out of an unprecedented pandemic, created millions of new jobs, rebuilt a battered economy, strengthened our democracy, and restored our standing in the world. By any measure, he has advanced our founders’ charge to build a more perfect union and his own stated goal of restoring the soul of our nation."

"We join millions of Americans in thanking President Biden for all he has accomplished, standing up for America time and again, with his North Star always being what’s best for the country," they continued.

"We are honored to join the President in endorsing Vice President Harris and will do whatever we can to support her."

"We’ve lived through many ups and downs, but nothing has made us more worried for our country than the threat posed by a second Trump term. He has promised to be a dictator on day one, and the recent ruling by his servile Supreme Court will only embolden him to further shred the Constitution. Now is the time to support Kamala Harris and fight with everything we’ve got to elect her. America’s future depends on it."

Internet shows mixed reactions as Kamala Harris joins presidential race

Social media users gave diverse reactions as Kamala Harris declared running for the White House. While some were eager for the VP to get going on her campaign trail, others expressed doubt if she had what it takes to defeat Donald Trump.

"Young people are 100% behind you! We will defeat Donald Trump," wrote a user on X.

"You are going to lose worse than Joe would have," opposed another.

"First Black woman president. Let’s f**king goooo!" cheered a third.

"Even many democrats do not believe you are the person for this job, but they hold their tongue in public," claimed a fourth.

"You and Joe put party before democracy," commented a fifth user.

"We will do everything to ensure your success. Thank you, madam Vice President," shared another.

"Do Americans a favor and drop out now," jibed yet another.
