WASHINGTON, DC: Kamala Harris just can’t seem to catch a break.

The Vice President became the unintended star of Jimmy Carter’s funeral after cameras captured her reaction to an unexpected bromance between President-elect Donald Trump and former President Barack Obama.

What was supposed to be a solemn tribute to the late president quickly turned into a viral spectacle, with Harris’ expression sparking a barrage of memes and jokes.

Donald Trump and Barack Obama steal spotlight at Jimmy Carter's funeral

It all went down at the Washington National Cathedral on Thursday, January 9, where political elites gathered to honor former president Jimmy Carter, who died on December 29 at the age of 100. But it wasn’t the tributes or speeches that stole the show—it was the sight of Obama and Trump sharing laughs and conversation while seated next to each other.

The seating arrangement alone was enough to raise eyebrows. Trump sat with Melania to his right, while Obama was on his left. Notably absent was Michelle Obama, who was nowhere to be seen. The vibe was more surreal than somber as the two former rivals unexpectedly started chatting and even laughing together.

Lipreader Jeremy Freeman later dished to the New York Post about what the duo allegedly discussed. According to Freeman, Trump leaned in to say, “We need to find a quiet place later in the day to chat about a matter of importance.” Obama reportedly nodded and replied, “Listen to me, it’s a chore, a chore.”

Possibly speaking of international agreements, Trump allegedly continued, “I’ve pulled out of that. It’s the conditions. Can you imagine that?” At another point, he asked, “Call me at the foy after, yep.” Obama’s response? “Can you just... it should be good.”

Trump supposedly wrapped up their exchange with, “I can’t talk, we have to find a quiet place sometime. This is a matter of importance, and we need to do this outside so that we can deal with it, certainly, today.”

Kamala Harris' ‘face says it all’

Kamala Harris, who was seated nearby, wasn’t part of the conversation—but critics on social media couldn’t help but focus on her reaction. A viral clip captured her stony-faced expression as Trump and Obama displayed their surprising camaraderie.

"Kamala’s face says it all—watching Obama talk to Trump has her absolutely fuming," one posted on X.

"She’s like the 'Karen' in church that turns and gives you a dirty look for whispering. Lol,"  a second user wrote.

"She knows she is the red-headed stepchild of the group lol," another quipped.

"It burns her to see her boss chatting with the guy that just destroyed her career," someone else offered.

"Kamala just realized she is not in their little club anymore," read a comment.

"She’s finally realizing she really didn’t matter at all," another added.

One individual wrote, "Damn, Kamala is so jealous that Obama is talking to DJT," while another wrote, "Kamala is full of jealousy! Kamala is thinking: Why is Obama talking to Trump and not me? Barack and I, we are both DEI people..."

One netizen remarked, "Looks like Trump and Obama are the popular kids. Kamala looks jealous and envious. Nobody is talking to the Bushes or the Clintons."

A tough week for Kamala Harris

The awkward funeral moments came just days after another major blow for Harris. On Monday, January 6, she presided over the joint session of Congress to certify the 2024 presidential election results—where she officially announced her own defeat.

Standing with her hands clasped, Harris maintained her composure as the results from each state were read aloud. She delivered the final word in less than 30 minutes, “The chair declares this joint session dissolved. Thank you.”

Later, reporters caught up with her as she left the Capitol. Despite the loss, Harris maintained diplomacy and said, “It’s a peaceful transfer of power. It’s a good day.”

As if the Trump-Obama buddy act wasn’t enough, Harris also endured some tension with outgoing First Lady Jill Biden at the funeral. The two women were seated side by side in the front row, but their interaction—or lack thereof—didn’t go unnoticed.

At one point, Harris briefly held Jill’s pocketbook while the First Lady got situated, but after handing it back both women stared forward and avoided any pleasantries. Jill even appeared to subtly scoot closer to her husband, President Joe Biden, as the service went on.

The chilly exchange wasn’t entirely shocking. The two have reportedly clashed before, including an awkward moment at Arlington National Cemetery on Veterans Day when their icy demeanor raised eyebrows.

Jill Biden herself was seen last month engaging in lighthearted banter with Trump during the reopening of Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris.
