WASHINGTON, DC: Cristiano Ronaldo’s surprise appearance at the White House on Tuesday, November 18, ignited a fierce online debate, and his sister has now stepped into the conversation. The global football icon met President Donald Trump during a previously unannounced visit, prompting immediate criticism from fans across several countries.

As the outrage grew through the week, Ronaldo’s sister, Katia Aveiro, took to Instagram on Thursday night to defend her brother, accusing critics of hypocrisy and emotional overreaction as the controversy spread across platforms.

Cristiano Ronaldo’s White House visit sparks political backlash

Ronaldo’s visit spread rapidly across social media after photos showed him greeting President Trump inside the White House. Many fans and political commentators accused the Portuguese forward of signaling support for the administration and lending his global platform to a political figure. Within hours, the backlash intensified, with critics calling the footballer’s decision “tone-deaf” and “irresponsible.”

Some supporters pushed back, arguing that the meeting was simply a moment of courtesy and not an ideological endorsement. As the debate escalated, pressure mounted and eventually drew a response from within the family.

Katia Aveiro calls critics 'hypocrites' in Instagram video

Katia Aveiro, long known for fiercely defending her brother, posted a lengthy video condemning the backlash.

“Today I’m going to talk about a current topic: Cristiano Ronaldo. The one who never needed favors, parties, ideologies or scripted speeches,” she said. “He only needed hard work, something that many of his critics only know by hearing about.”

She described the outrage surrounding the meeting as a “nuclear emotional explosion.”

“Hypocrites, you’re hypocrites! Suddenly, such a huge hysteria breaks out, as if Cristiano had just announced the end of the world. A visit to the White House becomes, in some people’s minds, a diplomatic crime.”

Aveiro reminded followers that her brother has represented Portugal on the world stage for two decades.

“For 20 years, he has carried Portugal on his shoulders. He came from poverty and built an empire without any shortcuts,” she said. “Do you really think he will lose a single neuron worrying because a few outraged people decided to pretend scandal?”

She added, “Thank you, Cristiano Ronaldo, for everything you’ve done for our country. I am proud of you as big as the world. Thank you!

The football star attended a black-tie state dinner hosted for Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman at the White House. Photos of Ronaldo posing with Trump quickly gained momentum online. In clips shared on social media, Trump mentioned that his son Barron was a “big fan,” joking that introducing Ronaldo may have boosted his standing at home.

Ronaldo later posted selfies and event images on Instagram, where the post has surpassed 17 million likes, thanking Trump and the First Lady for what he described as warm hospitality. He also noted that his fiancée, Georgina Rodríguez, was warmly welcomed at the event.
