Katie Hobbs dubbed as 'terrible governor' for saying Biden has lot to do to assure Americans after debate
PHOENIX: Arizona Gov Katie Hobbs has finally addressed President Joe Biden’s recent performance in the Democratic debate, diverging from her previous supportive stance.
During a media availability on Wednesday, July 10, when asked if Biden should remain the Democratic nominee, Hobbs responded, “That’s up to the president.”
Aftermath of Joe Biden's debate debacle
While refraining from divulging details about last week’s private meeting with Democratic governors, Hobbs emphasized the need for Biden to tackle the growing concerns about his viability as a candidate. “I know that Arizonans have been concerned about the president’s age, and since the debate, I think those concerns are even more top of mind,” Hobbs stated. “The president has a lot to do to assure Arizonans and Americans, and I know that he knows that that is his job over the coming weeks.”
During the 90-minute televised debate, Biden frequently mumbled, trailed off mid-sentence, and struggled to articulate his points. Presumptive GOP nominee Donald Trump seized the opportunity to ridicule Biden's occasionally unclear statements. The incumbent frequently stumbled during his responses and, at one instance, paused before stating, "I beat Medicare."
“Joe Biden can do the job, and that’s all I’m gonna say about the situation,” Hobbs remarked before fielding a question about Biden’s candidacy, per New York Post. With her re-election not due until 2026, Hobbs noted that her primary focus is on securing Democratic majorities in the state Legislature, where Republicans currently hold narrow control of both chambers.
Donald Trump takes slight lead in Arizona polls
However, Hobbs did not shy away from critiquing former President Trump. “I have one vote in this election just like everyone else. And to me, the choice is abundantly clear. The guy who’s gonna uphold democracy and the guy who’s trying to tear it down,” she asserted.
Hobbs reiterated this sentiment on KPNX-12’s 'Sunday Square Off' after last month’s debate but had not previously mentioned any concerns about Biden’s age. Echoing Biden and his surrogates, she urged voters not to “compare him to the Almighty” but to consider “the alternative.”
Despite Hobbs’ tempered critique, Biden’s supporters in Arizona remain steadfast. A Biden surrogate in Arizona dismissed speculation about replacing Biden on the ticket as being no “different than what Trump did leading up to January 6th.” Meanwhile, polls show Trump with a slight lead in Arizona, a crucial battleground state. The Cook Political Report recently shifted Arizona to “Lean Republican” in its Electoral College predictions, and RealClearPolitics indicates Trump has a 5.4% average lead in recent head-to-head polls.
