Katy Perry receives backlash for using wrong flag to wish England ahead of their Euro 2024 fixture

LONDON, ENGLAND: Katy Perry basked in the Euros fever as she wished the English soccer team ahead of their clash with Spain on Sunday, July 14. However, her efforts to cheer for the team quickly backfired as several of her fans slammed her for using the wrong flag.

On Sunday, as Gareth Southgate’s England was gearing up to face Spain in the Euro final fixture in Berlin, Germany, Perry was one among the fans who wished for the Three Lions to win. 

Taking to her X account, the 'American idol' judge wrote, “FOOTBALL IS COMING HOME,” along with an emoticon of the flag of the United Kingdom. 

However, the message did not sit well with the fans, who explained the difference between the flags to the songstress, per Daily Mail.

While the Union Jack (the flag posted by Perry) is the flag of the United Kingdom, comprising England, Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland, the white flag with the red cross belongs solely to England. 

Katy Perry slammed for using wrong flag to send wishes to England team 

Katy Perry's good wish message has, however, initiated an online war. While a majority of the social media users took it upon themselves to educate the 'Roar' singer, some fans defended her, saying it was the though that mattered the most.

One of the dissenters noted, "That's the wrong flag Katy. Not everyone in the UK will be supporting England."

Someone else fired at her, "You clearly don’t care - you didn’t even get the flag right. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 Stop latching onto trends to try and be relevant. It’s pathetic."

"Katy, it's 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿. Quite sure that the rest of the UK won't be cheering for England 😭😂," quipped another. 

Someone else described the difference, saying, "England flag is 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿. The UK, which includes Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland, is 🇬🇧."

Another reader, however, defended the songstress, as they commented online, "Why should an American know anything about England? It’s the thought that counts and it’s great to get support from overseas. Thank you, Katy."

"Thank you, Katy. Your heart was in the right place," said another enamored fan. 

"It’s the thought that counts, thanks Katy," chimed in another. 

England loses their second Euro final 

Despite the good wishes from fans over the world, the English side failed to lift the coveted Euro trophy twice in a row. During the high voltage match on Sunday, Spain defeated England in 2-1 goals. 

This was the second time, England got the beating as they lost to Italy in Euro 2020 (2021).
