Katy Perry reveals how she handles criticism, admits therapist's advice 'changed my life'

LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Katy Perry has learned to tune out criticism as she prepares for her lifetime tour.

Supporting her album '143', Perry revealed how she manages feedback by choosing to avoid reading reviews altogether.

Katy Perry revealed that she often avoids reading reviews of her albums. She explained that ignoring both good and bad reviews has been a valuable lesson.

"You shouldn't read it when it's good. You shouldn't read it when it's bad," Perry told People.

She credited her therapist for offering advice that reshaped her outlook on people's opinions.

"My therapist said something that really changed my life. What anybody thinks about you is none of your business. It's a what you think about yourself," Perry said.

Katy Perry hopes her album can be the soundtrack for 'anyone's life'

Despite any negative reviews, Katy Perry believes her album is about transformation and personal growth and she hopes it resonates with listeners.

The 'Hot N Cold' singer said, "I created this album out of a real shift in my life when I became a mother, and I really tapped into that feminine divine energy."



 

"The messages on it are celebratory. They're about love," she stated.

The 'Dark Horse' singer shared how her perspective has evolved since the pandemic.

"I have an incredible identity that I've been able to create since Covid-19, when a lot changed for so much," Perry said.

"So the album really just celebrates love and this unconditional love that I have been looking for my whole life and never really knew it existed. That was a cliché, and it's actually true," Perry said.

Katy Perry's response to criticism of 'Women's World' music video

In July 2024, Katy Perry addressed backlash over the music video for her song 'Women's World' which some critics claimed catered to the male gaze according to the publication.

On Instagram, she shared a behind-the-scenes clip from the video explaining the creative vision behind the project.

"We’re kind of just having fun being a bit sarcastic with it, it’s very slapstick, and very on the nose," Perry said in the video.

"..With this set, it’s like, ‘Oooh, we’re not about the male gaze but we really are about the male gaze,’ and we’re really overplaying it and on the nose because I’m about to get smashed which is like a reset, a reset for me, and a reset for my idea of feminine divine, and it’s a whole different world we go to after this," she added.

Perry concluded the video by discussing how they set the tone for the video.

"We wanted to open this video making it look like a super high gloss pop star video, and that’s what it is," Perry said at the time.
