LONDON, ENGLAND: Pop star Katy Perry is facing heavy criticism online after a video showed her smashing her own 41st birthday cake, which then fell to the floor and was eaten by her backup dancers.

The backlash erupted after footage of the moment—captured backstage on Perry's ongoing 'Lifetimes Tour'—was posted to X by a user who claimed her mother had baked the cake.

The clip showed the singer, still dressed in her stage costume, surrounded by her team after a concert. After blowing out the candles on a large sheet cake, Perry tried to hurl the entire dessert at a man in a headset.

The attempt went wrong—the cake slipped from her hands, hitting the floor. Perry laughed as her backup dancers crouched down, scooping handfuls of cake from the ground and eating it.

Baker’s daughter and social media users criticize Katy Perry’s actions

The moment quickly went viral, sparking outrage after one user, @katherinejaayne, reposted the clip, writing, “My mom was the one that baked this cake. She was so excited about the opportunity to make a cake for Katy Perry and spent so long on it. I’m genuinely confused and upset as to why she would do this.”

Her post drew tens of thousands of reactions, with many calling the act disrespectful and wasteful.

Netizens slam Katy Perry over food waste and lack of cleanup accountability

"I wonder what having that mindset is like, to just throw away a whole cake everyone could've enjoyed… and then leaving that mess on the floor for someone else to clean up cause I know damn well she ain't pick up no broom and mop after lol," one critic replied.

With another seconding, "Imagine being a 7 year old whose family couldn’t afford a birthday cake for him/her even though he/she really wanted one for their birthday, then watching this."

Another said, "I don’t understand why some people do this, ruining a beautiful cake like it means nothing. In other parts of the world, there are kids who can’t even have a cake on their birthday? It's such a waste and sign of disrespect to the baker who put so much effort to create the cake."

One netizen summed the pop star's public persona best: "Katy can't do anything without being cringe AF."

Some social media users defend Katy Perry’s right to do as she pleases

Despite this nearly universal condemnation, a few defenders joined in with divergent views. Some claimed that Perry was entitled to do as she pleased with the dessert : "As a baker, if I got paid then it’s theirs to do what they want with it. Your “mom” is going to get business alone from the fact that Katy had the cake to begin with."

Another user stated, "If your Mom was paid to bake the cake, then what happens to the cake afterwards should be no concern of anyone, except the buyer."
