MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA: Katy Perry mesmerized the crowd at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) during her AFL Grand Final performance on Saturday, September 28.

However, the pop sensation gained widespread attention for her "deflated balloon" moment during the 'Teenage Dream' segment of her performance.

Katy Perry's AFL Grand Final performance goes viral for 'deflated balloon' moment

Katy Perry, 39, performed in front of over 100,000 football fans, delivering both her timeless hits and a few fresh tracks on a gorgeous day in Melbourne.

Several dancers in silver and pink balloon costumes emerged excitedly at the MCG stadium as Perry performed her 2010 hit 'Teenage Dream', except for one dancer who seemed deflated.

Spectators ridiculed the deflated dancer on social media. A TikTok user shared a video of the incident, captioning it: "The deflated balloon is the new left shark for Katy Perry," as per Daily Mail.

An X (formerly Twitter) user also shared a similar clip with the caption, "Not one of the balloons getting deflated on katy perry’s [sic] afl performance left shark 2.0."

TikTok commenters also referenced the 2015 Super Bowl incident. One person asked, "Did someone say left shark?" while another pointed out that both viral moments happened during a performance of 'Teenage Dream', saying, "THE SAME SONG."

Another noted, "Why does it always happen during Teenage Dream."

Others reacted humorously to the TikTok video, with one commenter writing, "Do you ever feel like a plastic bag drifting through the wind wanting to start again," referencing Perry's 'Firework' lyrics.

Another commented, "The commitment to the routine though," per Us Weekly.

Perry also performed favorites like 'Roar', 'Dark Horse', 'California Gurls', and 'Firework' along with 'Teenage Dream'. She included two tracks from her new album, '143': 'Gorgeous' and 'Lifetimes'.

Katy Perry's AFL 'deflated balloon' moment recalls her 2015 Super Bowl XLIX halftime show

The viral deflated balloon moment from Katy Perry's AFL performance had a similar impact to the famous "Left Shark" that became notorious during Katy Perry's 2015 Super Bowl XLIX halftime show.

Two dancers in enormous blue shark costumes flanked the singer onstage as she performed 'Teenage Dream'. The one on the right seemed to dance in rhythm, while "Left Shark" quickly became a sensation, flopping around like a fish out of water.

In a 2018 interview with Us Weekly, Bryan Gaw—the man behind the costume—revealed that he intentionally leaned into the silliness. "I’m in a 7-foot blue shark costume. There’s no cool in that. So what’s the other option? Well, I’m gonna play a different character," he stated at the time.

Moreover, Perry humorously referenced "Left Shark" in a conversation with AFL before a show, telling the media outlet that a similar unexpected event might happen again.

That said, she hinted at what to expect from her performance: "There are over 150 dancers. It’s going to be really fun, larger than life, super bright, and full of the songs everyone wants to sing along to."

Many X users also took the opportunity to highlight how the "deflated balloon" at the AFL Grand Final was reminiscent of Katy Perry's "Left Shark" moment.

One X user also wrote, "Do you ever feel like a deflated balloon drifting through the wind wanting to start again?"

Another quipped, "Do you ever feel 'like a plastic bag.'"

"That’s not the only thing deflatable that we’re going to let the air out of," remarked one user, while another added, "It’s giving left shark."

Additionally, many fans compared the massive chrome-plated car she arrived in to a "giant goon bag," while others noted it resembled a "handheld vacuum cleaner."

One user wrote, "I still can’t get over how Katy Perry basically came out onto the MCG yesterday riding a giant Goon Bag. She’s an Aussie."

Another wrote, "Is Katy Perry riding on a giant shiny version of a handheld vacuum cleaner."
