Kennedy insiders slam Ryan Murphy for pushing JFK Jr series amid Tatiana Schlossberg’s death
BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS: Hollywood hitmaker Ryan Murphy is catching heat from inside America’s most famous political dynasty.
Murphy, the producer behind buzzy prestige TV, is being labeled “insensitive” by Kennedy family insiders for moving ahead with his upcoming series about John F Kennedy Jr, despite the family mourning a devastating recent loss.
His latest project, 'American Love Story,' focuses on the marriage and tragic deaths of JFK Jr and style icon Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy. The series is scheduled to premiere next month on FX and Hulu.
The debut comes just weeks after the December 30 death of JFK Jr’s niece, Tatiana Schlossberg, who passed away at age 35 following a battle with leukemia.
Kennedy family insiders call timing of JFK Jr series 'insensitive'
A source close to the Kennedy family spoke to Page Six about the looming premiere.
The insider said the decision to roll out the show while Caroline Kennedy (Tatiana’s mother and JFK Jr’s only sibling) is grieving is “insensitive … this is a very sorrowful time for Caroline and for everybody in the family right now."
According to the source, several family members expected Murphy and the network to pump the brakes. Some members of the family “assumed that the show would be pushed back, but there hasn’t been any mention of that,” the source said.
The source added that Caroline Kennedy, now 68, is “way too dignified to even think of approaching the producers” about delaying the series.
Jack Schlossberg slams Ryan Murphy
Tatiana’s brother and JFK Jr’s nephew, Jack Schlossberg, has previously slammed Ryan Murphy for producing a show about his late uncle without consulting the family.
“For those wondering whether his family was ever consulted, or has anything to do with, the new shows being made about him, the answer is no,” Schlossberg wrote on Instagram last year. “For the record, I think admiration for my Uncle John is great. What I don’t think is great is profiting off of it in a grotesque way.”
Schlossberg, who is currently running for a US House seat in New York’s 12th congressional district, has also criticized Murphy for not allocating profits from the show to the Kennedy Library. Murphy acquired the rights to 'Once Upon a Time: The Captivating Life of Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy,' which serves as the foundation for the series. Beller’s publisher confirmed the deal.
But that has not softened Schlossberg’s stance. He accused Murphy of “making millions” from John F Kennedy Jr’s story without giving back, saying Murphy has not contributed “any of your riches to the causes he championed, or the legacy of public service he represented.”
Murphy eventually addressed the backlash on the 'This Is Gavin Newsom Podcast,' where he said he “thought it was an odd choice to be mad about your relative that you really don’t remember.”
Schlossberg, who was just 6 years old when JFK Jr. died in a 1999 plane crash, fired back with a personal response. “My earliest memories are of John calling me Jackolantern and ‘the nudist,’ picking me up from school, his Pontiac convertible,” he said.
“I remember being the ring bearer at his wedding and the day he died. I remember Wyclef Jean singing at his funeral.”
JFK Jr series moves forward despite tragic family history and recent loss
JFK Jr and Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy were killed in July 1999 when the small plane he was piloting crashed into the Atlantic Ocean. Carolyn’s sister, Lauren Bessette, was also killed in the accident.
'American Love Story' casts Paul Anthony Kelly as JFK Jr Kelly’s only prior credit is a 2010 TV series titled 'Body Language.'
Sarah Pidgeon portrays Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy. Naomi Watts plays Jackie Kennedy, while Grace Gummer takes on the role of Caroline Kennedy.
Tatiana Schlossberg, a writer and environmental reporter, publicly detailed her illness in an essay published by The New Yorker in November. She is survived by her husband, George Moran, and their two young children, son Edwin, 3, and daughter Josephine, 1.
Her funeral service on Monday brought together members of the Kennedy family, alongside former President Joe Biden and former New York City Mayor Mike Bloomberg.
For now, FX and Hulu are pressing ahead, with no indication that the series will be delayed.
