LONDON, ENGLAND: While Prince Harry and Meghan Markle continue to live up to their titles in the United States, it appears as though King Charles may soon decide to take it away.

Sources claimed King Charles has been "in discussions" about depriving Harry and Meghan of their titles. Following their resignation as working royals, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex's titles have generated controversy.

King Charles allegedly discussed revoking Harry and Meghan's royal titles after Nigeria trip

The Palace faced requests for the couple's titles to be revoked after they relocated to the US. According to several sources, Prince William and King Charles have reportedly had "lengthy" conversations regarding this matter in recent weeks.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex notably resigned from their positions as senior working royals, a few months after relocating to America in 2020. With their two children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, the couple currently resides in Montecito, California.

However, on their recent tour to Nigeria, the Sussexes sat in chairs labeled "Duke" and "Duchess" with pride, and it was reported that they were "delighted" to have their royal titles on show.

Royal author Tom Quinn reported that William and Charles "have had lengthy discussions about stripping Meghan and Harry of their royal titles, but they are terrified this would backfire and make the situation worse," per OK! Magazine.

Speaking to The Mirror, Quinn went on to say that Harry and Meghan would still be able to work and travel without the titles and that they would generally be greeted with open arms wherever they went.

"The last thing they want is to give the renegade royals something else to complain about. William and his father know that even without their royal titles, Meghan and Harry would carry on traveling the world as if they were royals and most people in the world will still welcome them," Quinn said.

Quinn claimed that William and the King were "furious" because Harry and Meghan's trip to Nigeria seemed to be an official royal tour.

"All the signs were there, as the couple were greeted with dances, receptions, visits to schools and charities," Quinn remarked to The Mirror earlier. "William is absolutely furious and determined to find a way to stop this happening in [the] future. Charles is said to be angrier than anyone has ever seen him."

The duo retained their titles as Duke and Duchess of Sussex, but they lost their HRH titles in 2020 when they withdrew from their positions as senior working royals and were no longer referred to as His/Her Royal Highness. Harry also renounced his military rank when they left the United Kingdom and the monarchy.

King Charles receives online flak

Social media users quickly criticized the King over his reported decision to strip Harry and Meghan of royal titles as one X (formerly Twitter) user posted, "It would not change ANYTHING! They will continue being more popular, loved and respected than RF."

A second X user commented on the post, saying, "Titles mean nothing. They will still do good in the world and ppl will still love them."

"They would still be Prince and Princess Henry.... and even more popular," wrote another one.

One more chimed in, "Hell Hall , you should spend more time relating fact, not fiction. Or are you too reliant on Squady pay?"

Another one remarked, "The way that Will & Charles brief nonstop like little babies about H&M makes them look so antiquated, petty and weak."

"This would cement the path to abolition. Probably accelerate it. When Harry eventually is awarded the Nobel peace prize for his invictus games work, uniting warriors worldwide, what will William do then?" questioned one.

One Harry supporter wrote, "We don’t love them for their titles. We love them because they are good people. Calling them Haz and Meg is only going to make them even more endearing. Unlike others, they don’t need a title to be someone. They are who they are."
