Lauren Boebert rips Joe Biden and Kamala Harris for locking up public lands to protect 'ugly' animal
DENVER, COLORADO: Rep Lauren Boebert (R-Colorado) took a jab at President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris for locking up public lands to protect Gunnison sage-grouse, a species of bird that is listed 'threatened' by the US Fish and Wildlife Service.
The Audubon Society considers the bird 'endangered' as researchers have said that the population of Gunnison sage-grouse in Colorado has dropped in recent years due to loss of habitat. Around 1,800 birds were estimated to be left in the state in 2019.
Lauren Boebert criticizes Biden and Harris for locking up public lands to protect Gunnison sage-grouse
The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) announced on Thursday, October 17, that it had approved final plans to protect over 2 million acres of BLM-managed public land and almost 3 million acres of "public subsurface mineral estate" that serves as habitat for the 'threatened' bird. The decision has put the lands off-limits for potential oil drilling.
In a statement emailed to Newsweek on Monday, October 21, the Republican Congresswoman accused Biden and Harris at the BLM and former president Barack Obama of participating in a "tyrannical seizure of our land" that could "destroy" Colorado's oil and gas industry.
She added that the BLM was protecting the greater sage-grouse, a bird that lives in a similar habitat and range but is less threatened than its cousin, the Gunnison sage-grouse.
Boebert said in her statement, "The Biden-Harris Administration and the radical progressives in charge of BLM are attempting to lock up our public lands from critical uses like oil & gas exploration."
She further mentioned that instead of putting Coloradans first, they're "continuing to bend the knee to Green New Deal worshippers who want to destroy Colorado's oil & gas industry" and several good-paying jobs that support families across the state.
She continued, "Obama, Biden, and Harris have tried to use the Gunnison Sage-Grouse's ugly, non-endangered cousin, the Greater Sage-Grouse, to lock up more than 183 million acres in the West."
She also stated that the new "land grab attempt" doubles down to lock up tens of millions of acres of land and subsurface mineral rights. She blamed the Biden-Harris 'regime' for not showing any consideration for what is best for all Coloradans.
She added that she would "fight this newest land grab just like I've done for every ridiculous attempt from the Biden-Harris Administration and BLM to damage our economy."
BLM says final recovery plan to protect 'threatened bird' was approved in 2020
BLM Colorado State Director Doug Vilsack mentioned in a press release that the federal government "worked tirelessly" to satisfy both environmental and energy industry concerns as the plan was designed to "limit disturbance in the habitat" of the Gunnison sage-grouse.
The press release also stated that a "final recovery plan" to protect the 'threatened' bird was approved by the Fish and Wildlife Service in 2020, during former President Donald Trump's administration.
Despite BLM's claim that 85 percent of "high potential" acres that it manages in the area will remain open to potential future oil and gas leasing, the plan includes a "one-mile buffer around Gunnison sage-grouse habitat as well as the designation of a new backcountry conservation area and three new areas of critical environmental concern."
Internet trolls Lauren Boebert for ripping Biden and Harris' effort to protect 'threatened' bird
Several internet users trolled Lauren Boebert as she slammed Joe Biden and Kamala Harris for locking up public lands to protect Gunnison sage-grouse.
Some online comments read, "I hope she doesn’t get reelected" and "We sure she's not the ugly animal?"
A user also wrote, "Lauren Boebert is wrong. Ugly animals should be protected, even if they wear glasses," while one added, "Oh! Boobaert! I hope this is eouwer last time "commenting" before getting voted out!!!!!!!!!"
A person also mentioned, "This WILL BE Boebert's last term in office. Carpetbaggers don't sway many voters," whereas one mentioned, "No animal is remotely as ugly as some politicians. But then, "politician" may not be an appropriate word to describe Boebert."
