WASHINGTON, DC: Rep Lauren Boebert (R-Col) won her GOP primary on June 25 after running in a different district, projected NBC News. Boebert defeated five other candidates to represent the GOP in the 4th district of the state in the upcoming general election. The seat opened up after Rep Ken Buck announced his decision to resign earlier this year.

In 2022, Boebert was reelected into Congress from the 3rd district by a narrow margin of 546 votes. Had she stayed back, she would have faced the prospect of a rematch with Adam Frisch, a well-funded Democrat.

Lauren Boebert's campaign promises?

Boebert had stated back in December 2023, while announcing her decision to switch districts in 2024, “Since the first day I ran for public office I promised I would do whatever it takes to stop the socialists and communists from taking over our country."

"That means staying in the fight. But it also means not allowing Hollywood elites and progressive money groups to buy the 3rd District," she said.

She also claimed the move to be a "fresh start" after what was a difficult year for her. She got divorced and was granted a temporary restraining order against her ex-husband in February. Boebert also made headlines in 2023 for being escorted out of a musical for allegedly “vaping, singing (and) causing a disturbance.”

Boebert enjoyed the support of former President Donald Trump and had created a conservative firebrand profile nationally, in part by promising to take on high-profile liberal figures such as Rep Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY).

Lauren Boebert turned down special election after Ken Buck's resignation

After the resignation of Ken Buck, Boebert decided not to run in the special election to serve out the rest of Buck’s term. She chose to stay in Congress and represent the 3rd district till the end of her term.

NBC News projected Republican George Lopez winning the special election to immediately replace Buck for the rest of his term. He will be serving in the Congress for about six months. The former mayor of Parker, Colorado, is a strong conservative known for taking far-right positions, including casting doubt on 2020 election results and supporting total ban on abortions.

Internet reacts to Lauren Boebert's victory

The internet trolled Boebert while reacting to the news of her primary win, as the following comments on Facebook demonstrate.

"Imagine what the competition was like if they voted for her," wrote a user.

"What is wrong with those voters that causes them to support someone like her?" inquired another.

"Republicans theme seems to be 'elect the dumbest we got,'" jibed a third.

"The level of stupidity is astounding," chided a fourth user.

"So the ignorance runs thick across district lines. Cool," commented a fifth.
