LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: In a courtroom showdown marked by fiery accusations and legal jousting, Hunter Biden's defense attorney, Abbe Lowell, vehemently contested the tax charges levied against his client by special counsel David Weiss.

The legal skirmish unfolded on Monday, April 1, resulting in a significant setback for Biden as his bid to dismiss the charges was denied by US District Judge Mark Scarsi.

Claims of Selective Prosecution

Lowell did not mince words, insisting that the tax charges against the first son were "selective and vindictive." However, Judge Scarsi rebuffed Lowell's claims, dismissing them as mere conjecture lacking substance.

In response, Lowell vowed to persist in challenging Weiss' prosecution tactics, declaring, "We will continue to vigorously pursue Mr. Biden’s challenges to the abnormal way the Special Counsel handled this investigation and charged this case."

Weiss, a Trump appointee who assumed the role of special counsel following a failed plea deal with Hunter Biden, initiated the charges against him for an alleged four-year tax evasion scheme.

The charges against Hunter Biden include felonies and misdemeanors related to his alleged failure to file and pay taxes, evasion of assessment, and filing a false or fraudulent tax return.

The prosecution alleges that Biden evaded paying at least $1.4 million in federal taxes from January 2017 to October 2020. Furthermore, prosecutors contend that Biden indulged in an "extravagant lifestyle," funding it through illicit means such as misclassifying personal expenses as business deductions.

Judge's Response

Judge Scarsi, appointed by Trump and presiding over the Central District of California, dismantled Lowell's barrage of motions aimed at dismissing the tax charges. He rebuked Lowell's assertions, highlighting factual inaccuracies in some of his briefs and dismissing claims of political influence over prosecutorial decisions.

“Politicians take credit for many things over which they have no power and have made no impact,” Scarsi wrote. “Just because someone says they influenced a prosecutorial decision does not mean that they did.”

Prosecutors, in their rebuttal to Lowell's accusations, refuted any notion of conspiracy, asserting that the prosecution remained uninfluenced by external pressures. They maintained that the charges against Biden were grounded in evidence and legal merit, devoid of any political machinations.

“The defendant concocts a conspiracy theory that the prosecution has ‘upped the ante’ to appease politicians who have absolutely nothing to do with the prosecution and are not even members of the current Executive Branch,” prosecutors wrote last month.

The legal saga surrounding Hunter Biden's tax charges has been fraught with controversy. Lowell contended that the collapse of a previous plea deal was orchestrated by external pressures from "extremist Republicans and right-wing press outlets."

However, prosecutors maintained that the proposed agreement lacked official approval and, therefore, did not confer immunity upon Biden.

Hunter Biden's legal woes extend beyond the tax charges to include allegations of illegal possession of a firearm while addicted to illicit drugs. Despite pleading not guilty to all charges, the legal battles persist as his defense seeks to dismantle the case against him, per the New York Post.

Social Media Reactions

Social media was inundated with reactions after the first son's lawyer described his client's prosecution as "abnormal."

"Let the crying begin," one posted on X.

"The IRS sat on his tax evasion for years… Would any of us get that treatment?? NO !!!!!" another fumed.

"Abnormal? When was the last time the IRS let the statute of limitations expire on a multi-million tax fraud? That is abnormal!" a comment read.

"I guess if you call getting away with everything 'abnormal,'" someone else quipped.

"This guy needs to work for Trump if he wants to see "abnormal" charges. Hunter didn't pay over a million dollars in taxes. If that was any of us we'd already be in jail. The fact that he's still walking the streets is what's abnormal," another chimed in.

That said, Hunter Biden's trials are scheduled to proceed. Jury selection for the tax-related trial is set for June 20 in California, while proceedings for the firearm charges are tentatively planned for June 3 in Delaware, the New York Post reported.
