Lewis Capaldi sparks confusion with tongue-in-cheek response to Lewis Hamilton Coachella mix-up

INDIO, CALIFORNIA: Scottish singer Lewis Capaldi recently sparked confusion on social media after sharing a humorous response to being mistaken for F1 driver Lewis Hamilton.

The mix-up, which seemingly stemmed from their identical first names, saw an X user mistaking Hamilton’s surname for Capaldi while sharing a clip of the star racing driver chatting with Kim Kardashian during Justin Bieber’s headlining set at Coachella 2026.

The clip, shared by X user @/DistinctPost, was posted with a caption that read, “Lewis Capaldi spotted with Kim Kardashian at Coachella during Justin Bieber’s set last night.” 

The video showed Kardashian and Hamilton vibing to Bieber and chatting with each other while standing in the crowd. The reality star covered her face with a scarf while Hamilton donned a black hoodie, black cap and sunglasses.

As the post with the wrong caption started gaining traction on social media, Capaldi re-shared the post on X, and wrote, “Wow guys not cool such an invasion of our privacy.”

Shortly after, the original poster addressed the error in their post, clarifying, “Guys it was a typo. I accidentally promoted Lewis Hamilton* to Louis Capaldi.”

Lewis Capaldi’s response sparks confusion online

While Capaldi attempted to respond to the mistaken identity with humor, his reaction triggered confusion on social media. Several internet users misunderstood the singer’s joke and believed he was complaining about breach of privacy while attending a public event with an A-list celebrity.

“Imagine thinking you have privacy in the middle of one of the most video/photographed events of the year standing in a mass audience of people,” one user wrote.

In response, Capaldi said, “ur a silly billy my guy.”

Another critic said, “tries a sneaky link with billionaire influencer in public event and then gets mad when people find out.”

The ‘Someone You Love’ hitmaker responded with further sarcasm, saying, “is this ur first day on this planet.”

One user said, “You can't complain man! That's how celebrity life's always gonna be.”

While another added, “This is sarcasm, right? If not… You’re at a music festival. Is there an expectation of privacy in the crowd at a music festival?” 

However, some users were quick to point out that Capaldi made it seem like he was the one in the clip only to poke fun at the mistaken identity. 

“How are people in this comment section so thick, it’s Lewis Hamilton. Not Lewis capaldi and he’s clearly joking as someone has quite clearly made a mistake with the names,” one wrote. 

“This is the most Lewis Capaldi response. ​Placing my bets on it, Lewis is actually not the one under the hoodie,” another added. 

“People not getting the joke I feel so bad for you,” a third user stated.

Kim Kardashian and Lewis Hamilton keeps low profile during Coachella appearance

Kardashian and Hamilton fueled romance rumors once again as they appeared in Coachella together. The duo attempted to maintain a low profile, wearing coordinated outfits that mostly masked their faces. 

They were joined by Kardashian’s eldest daughter, North West, who she shares with ex-husband, Kanye West. At one point, the rumored couple were even spotted linking arms while heading towards the VIP section. 

Hamilton and Kardashian sparked dating rumors earlier this year before being seen together at the Super Bowl. The Skims founder also joined Hamilton on a holiday trip to Tokyo with her three kids.
