Lily Allen faces backlash for returning her dog to shelter after she 'ruined my life'
NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: Lily Allen, who recently labeled James Corden as a 'beg friend' is under fire for returning her dog to an animal shelter due to "bad behavior."
During the August 22 episode of her 'Miss Me?' podcast, Allen revealed that she and her husband, David Harbour, had decided to return their family puppy, Mary, to the shelter.
Lily Allen reveals how her pup 'ruined' her life
At the start of their conversation, Lily Allen eagerly shared a photo of a Chihuahua mix puppy she was considering adopting with her husband, 'Stranger Things' star David Harbour, and her two daughters, 12-year-old Ethel and 11-year-old Marnie.
The couple originally adopted Mary from Animal Haven in 2021, according to Page Six.
"We actually did adopt a dog together already," Allen shared, "But then it ate my passport, so I took it back to the home."
Allen, who has two daughters with her ex, Sam Cooper, added, "Mary didn’t stop at one—she ate all three of our passports."
"They had our visas in [there], and I can’t tell you how much it cost to get everything replaced," Allen explained. "It was in COVID, so it was just an absolute logistical nightmare."
The English singer continued, “Because the father of my children lives in England, I couldn’t get them back to see their dad for, like, four months, five months because this f**king dog had eaten the passports,” she said. “I just couldn’t look at it. I was like: ‘You ruined my life.’”
Lily then insisted that the passport incident was merely the last straw in a series of issues with the puppy, as per Fox News.
She said, “Also, you know, passports weren’t the only things she ate. She was a very badly behaved dog, and I really tried very hard with her, but it didn’t work out. The passports were the straw that broke the camel’s back, so to speak.”
Cooper and Allen share daughters Ethel, 12, and Marnie, 11.
Mary has an Instagram page of her own
Lilly Allen acknowledged that her decision has become "quite a bone of contention" before explaining the logistical reasons behind it.
Eagle-eyed fans have since unearthed an Instagram page seemingly dedicated to Lily and David’s former puppy, Mary Harbour.

Although the account has been dormant for years, David still follows it and appears in several of the photos.
The account’s first post, dated May 1, 2021, features a video of Mary chewing on a pink hat while joyfully pausing to greet David with a wagging tail.

Another snapshot shows David carrying Mary in a bag on the subway, humorously captioned: “Pupway with Dad. Quickest way to Brooklyn.”
The final post on the account, which Lily liked, was shared on May 6, 2021, showcasing Mary with the playful caption: “do i look cute?” [sic]
Lilly Allen faces backlash for returning her pup
Public criticism continued to mount as viewers expressed their outrage over Lily Allen's recent comments about her dog's behavior and her decision to return the pup to a shelter.
One viewer expressed, "Dogs returned to shelters often become harder to rehome and are at higher risk of being euthanized. Training dogs is easy. Dogs are NOT ‘badly behaved’ - they are ‘untrained’ by the humans that are responsible for them. This is a sad listen. Shame on you, Lily Allen. Shame." [sic]
Another viewer shared, "Absolute piece of human The problem was you @lilyallen not the dog. On the bright side at least that poor pup won’t have to tolerate you any more. #scum." [sic]
One viewer pointed out, "What a piece of garbage. That poor dog. Pray the dog got adopted by someone who is actually a caring person."
A follower observed, "The dog will be better off without you. Shame on you for even having a pet."
One comment stated, "I have no idea who Lily Allen is, but she obviously should never have a dog again. Her former dog's misbehaviors are on her, not the dog. @lilyallen."
Another comment read, "We keep our passports in a locked, fireproof box. We’ve had several dogs and not one has eaten our passports. Maybe keep important documents out of a dog’s reach?"
"No bad dogs, only bad people Lily Allen. You," explained an individual.
