Lionel Richie says ignoring fans 'would be the worst' warns celebrities after Roan backlash
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: 'American Idol' judge Lionel Richie has issued a warning to aspiring stars: connect with your fans, or face consequences. The caution comes after Chappell Roan faced backlash over a tense encounter involving professional soccer player Jorginho, his 11-year-old stepdaughter Ada, and her mother, Catherine Harding. Richie’s remarks highlight the importance of engagement and accountability for celebrities.
Lionel Richie speaks out on celebrity behavior
During a conversation with his son-in-law Joel Madden, Richie said, “I was invisible once,” reflecting on what it feels like not to be noticed. He added, “They want to say something to you. And you can see it on their face. They want to say something. And for me to ignore them would be the worst.”
Richie also pointed out that meeting a celebrity can sometimes be disappointing. “Sometimes you meet the person you idolize the most, and you're sorry you met them,” he said. The singer explained he made a personal promise: “I made a promise to myself – I'm never going to be that. Never.”
He stressed that many entering the industry forget an essential point: “The thing that happens a lot of times is, I tell people when they get into the business, there's one thing you didn't calculate. I hope you like people.” If someone doesn’t enjoy interacting with others, fame can feel isolating. “Because if you don’t like people, here’s how it’s going to sound. You spend the first half of your career going, ‘Look at me, look at me…’ And then you finally get famous. ‘Don’t look at me. Don’t look at me.’”
Richie concluded that fame and success come with public attention and can’t be separated. “The universe gave you what you asked for. Now what is it about people that you don't like, or you want to be famous and rich without the people? It doesn’t work like that. You have to be able to engage.”
Chappell Roan controversy explained
The controversy reportedly began during Roan’s appearance at Lollapalooza Brazil last week. The singer was accused of asking security to confront Jorginho’s 11-year-old stepdaughter, Ada, after the child noticed her while having breakfast at a hotel in São Paulo.
On March 21, Jorginho described what he called a “very upsetting situation” involving his family. He said Ada had been “incredibly excited” to see an artist she admired and had even made a sign for her. By coincidence, they were staying at the same hotel, and during breakfast, Ada noticed Roan.
According to Jorginho, the interaction was brief. “My daughter, like any child, recognized her, got excited, and just wanted to make sure it was really her,” he said, adding that she “didn't even approach” Roan. “She simply walked past the singer's table, looked to confirm it was her, smiled, and went back to sit with her mum. She didn't say anything, didn't ask for anything.”.

He said the situation escalated when a security guard approached their table aggressively, accusing his daughter of “disrespect” and harassment. The child was left “extremely shaken” and in tears.
Roan, 28, later responded on Instagram Stories, denying that the fan encounter took place. Following the incident, Rio de Janeiro Mayor Eduardo Cavaliere stated that Roan would no longer be welcome to perform in the city.
