'Lord of the Rings' stars Elijah Wood, Sean Astin, Dominic Monaghan and Billy Boyd reunite
CAMBRIDGE, MASSACHUSETTS: More than two decades after the last 'Lord of the Rings' movie was released, four of its stars reunited for a night out in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
Elijah Wood, Sean Astin, Dominic Monaghan, and Billy Boyd who all starred in 'The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King', met on Saturday, August 8, at La Royal restaurant in Cambridge and shared a glimpse of their outing with fans.
'Lord of the Rings' stars reunite for a night of conversation
The rare outing photo was shared on Instagram by Monaghan and showed all four actors smiling at the camera for a selfie. A couple sitting behind them also appeared to photobomb the group.
Monaghan's playful caption read, “Four Halflings. Three cocktails. Two desserts. ONE great night of conversation. More to come. #becurious shoutout to the couple in the back. Well played. Thank you @laroyal_cambridge.”
Astin also shared the photo from their reunion on his Instagram page. The 55-year-old actor kept his caption brief, writing, “The band's all here.”
Elijah Wood returns as Frodo in 'The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum'
All four actors starred in the epic 'Lord of the Rings' trilogy, with Wood playing Frodo Baggins, Astin portraying his loyal companion Samwise Gamgee, Boyd playing Peregrin “Pippin” Took and Monaghan portraying Meriadoc “Merry” Brandybuck.
Their fun outing came as Wood is set to reprise his role as Frodo in the upcoming film 'The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum', which is scheduled for release late next year.
Wood's return to the franchise will bring him back to one of his most recognizable roles more than 20 years after the original trilogy concluded. The new film is expected to revisit the world created by J.R.R. Tolkien.
Sean Astin celebrates his Hollywood family
Astin met his former co-stars a few months after he gave a shoutout to his Hollywood family at the 2026 Actor Awards after becoming SAG-AFTRA president in September last year.
'The Goonies' star reportedly said, “Special mentions to my father, John Astin, 95 years old. He originated the role of Gomez Addams in The Addams Family. To my late mother, Academy Award winner, and former president of our union, Patty Duke.”
“To my brother, Mackenzie, who has an early call time tomorrow, shooting a show in Atlanta; and to my daughter, Ali, we currently have a movie out this weekend in actual theaters,” he stated.
Astin then jokingly added that there's “five members of the union in our family. And if you want to know what it's like to live with that, you can ask my patient, beautiful wife of 35 years, Christine.”
The trade union leader also mentioned his two daughters, Elizabeth and Isabella, who, as per him, are “two full-time self-tape readers” who “do story and character notes” and “set up all the equipment.”
“Awesome free labor!” Astin added.
