Luke Grimes reveals where he stands with co-star Kevin Costner two years after ‘Yellowstone’ exit
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Luke Grimes has reflected on his relationship with former co-star Kevin Costner following his exit from ‘Yellowstone’ two years ago.
The 42-year-old actor revealed that he has not spoken to Costner since 2024 but also noted that there is no bitterness between them.
Luke Grimes hasn’t spoken to Kevin Costner since 2024
“I have never spoken to Kevin since we stopped working together. Not for any other reason other than we are both just busy guys and life moves on,” Grimes told USA Today.
He also shared his doubts about Costner rejoining the ‘Yellowstone’ universe as his on-screen father, John Dutton, on ‘Marshals’, the CBS spinoff.
“If there was a flashback, I would want it to be with [Kayce’s wife] Monica than John. I think that would be more poignant to the character, but we will see,” the musician noted.

Grimes, however, added that “there’s been no conversation, but, I sure would love it.”
Speaking about his other co-star Kelsey Asbille, who played Monica in ‘Yellowstone’, the ‘American Sniper’ star stated, “I love working with her.”
Taylor Sheridan explains why Kevin Costner left ‘Yellowstone’
Grimes’ admission came after Costner's character was killed off in the final season of ‘Yellowstone’ amid rumors of issues between him and series creator Taylor Sheridan.
However, Sheridan cleared the air in June this year, reportedly saying, “That was in his contract. In my mind, that’s when his youngest son takes over [on the show]… But the network was so scared of not having Kevin be a part of it, even though Kevin was ready.”
“He was ready to go. He had other things he wanted to do,” he added, before asserting that the 71-year-old star worked longer than his contract because the show was “such a behemoth”.
Sheridan even claimed that “there was even pressure from some of the cable companies wanting to put it in their deals, that they were going to get an X-number of seasons of ‘Yellowstone’ to re-up what this cable company is. That’s the power of a really big hit show.”

In 2024, Costner himself addressed his exit. The Oscar-winning actor reportedly said, “I did it for five years, and I wanted to work more than once a year. We lost an entire year at one point, and I thought, that can't happen again. It was well over a year.”
“Material has to be ready at certain times, and we weren't able to do that. After five years, I thought, I'm not going to do this. If we can get that, we can do that, and I'll do it,” he had added in 2024.
