Their turbulent journey, chronicled extensively on 'Mama June: From Not to Hot', included struggles with addiction and contentious episodes and lasted nearly five years. Shannon and Doak disclosed spending over $150,000 on cocaine within a mere six-month period. This revelation underscored the financial toll of their substance abuse issues. Subsequently, both committed to seeking rehabilitation to address their challenges, as documented in her spinoff 'Mama June: Family Crisis' in June 2020. “I wake up every morning and make a promise to myself that I'll stay clean for the next 24 hours,” she shared with Us Weekly in March 2021.

Thompson accused her mother, Mama June Shannon, of misappropriating funds from her Coogan account. The account, established to safeguard the earnings Thompson accrued as a child actor, was intended for her use upon turning 18 in August 2023. However, a discovery by Lauryn "Pumpkin" Efird revealed that only $33,000 remained in the account, sparking allegations of financial mismanagement. Initially, Shannon refuted these claims, asserting that the expenditures were made for Thompson's benefit. “You have been taking care of your own self, paying your own bills since you were the age of 12,” she said at the time. “And you’ve been doing a good job of it.” Facing mounting backlash, Shannon addressed the situation directly through social media. In a March 2024 TikTok video, she acknowledged owing Thompson $30,000 and committed to repaying the amount.

The account, designated for child actors to secure their earnings, revealed a balance of only $33,000, significantly less than the "six figures" Thompson anticipated from her television appearances, including roles on shows like 'DWTS', 'The Beach Ball', and 'The Masked Singer'. Initially, Shannon attributed the diminished balance to taxes and other expenses. However, she later admitted that funds earned by Thompson during her TV career had been used over the years to support their family, rather than being fully preserved for Thompson's future use.

The financial dispute deepened the division between Thompson and Shannon. Thompson explicitly stated she did not want her mother attending her goodbye party before leaving for college and even requested that Shannon refrain from visiting her in Colorado. Despite Thompson’s wishes, Shannon told ET that she continues to visit her daughter at school. Reflecting on past advice from her children, Shannon said, "Something my kids told me four years ago and back in December... they said, 'Well, hey, we want you to keep showing up even if we don't want you to show up.' I keep doing that no matter if we're fighting or we aren't getting along or there's some controversy."
