ROME, GEORGIA: Rep Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Georgia) attacked her GOP colleague Mike Gallagher on Saturday, March 23, characterizing his decision to resign from Congress next month as “an intentional betrayal.”

“He should be expelled if he refuses to leave immediately in order to allow his district to hold a special election to elect a representative so that their district can have a voice for the remainder of the 118th Congress!” Greene tweeted about the Wisconsin lawmaker. “Leaving after the deadline is intentional betrayal!” she added.

What prompted Marjorie Taylor Greene to go after Mike Gallagher?

According to Daily Beast, the announcement of Gallagher's resignation from Congress on April 19, which came just a day after he declared that he would not seek re-election, has been met with a reproachful response.

Due to Wisconsin state law, seat vacancies arising after the second Tuesday of April are filled through the general election in November instead of a special election; hence, Gallagher's decision also means that his seat will remain unoccupied until January.

This development represents another setback for the shrinking Republican House majority, which will be further diminished by Colorado Rep Ken Buck's resignation from Congress next week.

Following Gallagher's departure, the Republicans' majority in the House will be reduced to 217 seats, compared to the Democrats' 213.

“Four terms serving Northeast Wisconsin in Congress has been the honor of a lifetime and strengthened my conviction that America is the greatest country in the history of the world,” Gallagher wrote in his Friday, March 22, statement on X.

According to Forbes, Gallagher intends to work for the defense contractor Palantir after stepping down from his congressional duties.
