WASHINGTON, DC: Marjorie Taylor Greene is openly pushing back against Donald Trump after he said he plans to endorse either John Cornyn or Ken Paxton in the Texas GOP Senate runoff and ask the other to step aside.

The president made the remarks Wednesday, March 3, saying the primary “cannot, for the good of the Party, and our Country, itself, be allowed to go on any longer.” He added that once he endorses a candidate, the other should drop out so Republicans can focus on the general election.

Greene, however, says that approach is “wrong.”

Marjorie Taylor Greene says Texas voters should choose freely

In a fiery statement, Greene argued that the people of Texas - not party leaders - should decide who advances.

Greene warned that forcing the race to end early could backfire. “People are furious over this and if Trump does this, it could actually be the real reason Texas Senate seat flips blue,” she claimed.

According to Greene, “stealing people’s opportunity to elect their leaders by force will definitely piss off voters and will lead to even more sitting it out.”

Donald Trump says party must focus on defeating Democrat James Talarico

Trump’s announcement came after Texas Sen John Cornyn and Attorney General Ken Paxton advanced to a runoff following a bruising primary fight. As of Wednesday afternoon, Cornyn led Paxton by just over one percentage point, with 97 percent of estimated votes counted, according to The Associated Press.

On Truth Social, Trump stressed party unity and the need to turn attention to Democrat James Talarico, who won his party’s primary.

“We have an easy to beat, Radical Left Opponent, and we have to TOTALLY FOCUS on putting him away, quickly and decisively!” Trump wrote. “Both John and Ken ran great races, but not good enough. Now, this one, must be PERFECT!”

He suggested the runoff battle should not drag on for another 12 weeks, especially with a general election ahead.

Marjorie Taylor Greene accuses GOP leadership of backing wrong candidates

Greene went further, accusing Trump of backing the wrong Republicans in past races.

“Trump has endorsed many of the worst Republicans with the worst voting records and has ruined so many primary races with his endorsements, swaying voters away from REAL America First candidates,” she said.

She also criticized what she described as a coalition of consultants and powerful interests influencing decisions, arguing that “your government is not for the people and by the people. It’s for them and only them.”

The Texas GOP primary has already been marked by sharp attacks, including ads targeting Paxton’s personal and professional controversies.

Democrats are quickly rallying behind Talarico, hoping internal Republican divisions could open a path in a state that has long voted red.
