NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: In the aftermath of former President Donald Trump's conviction in the New York hush money case, his niece, Mary Trump, offered her candid take on the historic verdict.

The outspoken niece recently appeared on CNN’s 'The Situation Room' with Wolf Blitzer, sharing her perspective on what her uncle might be feeling after the guilty verdict, as reported by The Hill.

Mary shared her thoughts in detail during the interview. "I think we need to factor in the idea that Donald, never in a million years, thought that this could happen to him," she remarked.

"And understandably so, this is somebody who has lived his life with total impunity. And … for it finally to come, for accountability finally to come, after almost eight decades, must have taken the wind out of him," Mary continued.

The conviction marked a historic moment as Trump became the first former US president to be convicted of a felony. A jury found him guilty of every charge related to falsifying business records in order to cover up affairs that occurred prior to his 2016 presidential campaign.

The former president vehemently criticized the trial, claiming, "This was a rigged, disgraceful trial. The real verdict is going to be November 5 by the people, and they know what happened here, and everybody knows what happened here."

During a subsequent interview with CNN anchor Abby Phillip, Mary speculated on her uncle's internal struggle post-conviction.

She suggested that Trump was "probably doing his best not to think about anything, quite honestly, but, I think even he cannot deny, as much as he’d like to, that today, he was convicted on 34 felony counts and that he is indeed a convicted felon and he’s going to have to grapple with the fallout of that."

Mary drew parallels to her uncle’s reaction following the 2020 election loss, suggesting that his current state of mind might lead to similar denial and attempts to reshape reality.

“Privately, he was able to concede that he had lost, but very quickly after that, the humiliation sort of overwhelmed him, and we ended up with ‘the Big Lie,’ which led to ‘Stop the Steal,’ which led to the insurrection," Mary explained.

"So, unfortunately, I do think we need to be braced for a pivot to his attempts, at least, to create another alternate reality in which he can protect himself from what is — unquestionably — a devastating loss in court today," she added.
