According to The Hollywood Reporter's 'Awards Chatter' podcast on Monday, June 10, Bomer recalled being a top contender to play Clark Kent/Superman in a film that ultimately never got made.

"This was a very early iteration of Superman written by JJ Abrams, called Superman: Flyby, I think. It never came to light," Bomer recalled, noting that the producers of the soap opera 'Guiding Light' even wrote off his character, believing he had a chance to play the major superhero role.

Bomer claimed, “It looked like I was the director’s choice for the role. I signed a three-picture deal with Warner Bros.”

When asked if his sexual orientation, which he didn't publicly disclose until 2012, impacted his casting, he said, "That was a time in the industry when something like that could still really be weaponized against you. How, and why, and who, I don’t know, but yeah, that’s my understanding.”

In 2012, Bomer publicly came out as gay at the Steve Chase Humanitarian Awards, where he acknowledged his husband, Simon Halls, and their three children while accepting an honor.

As he mentioned on the podcast, the film 'Superman: Flyby' never came to fruition. In 2006, Bryan Singer released the next film in the franchise, 'Superman Returns,' starring Brandon Routh in the lead role.

According to Advocate, author Jackie Collins mentioned in a 2012 interview with Gaydar Radio that someone who didn't like Bomer informed the producers about his sexuality, which contributed to his rejection.

"They said, 'No, no, we can't cast you.' The reason he didn't get cast was because he was gay," Collins stated at that time.
