Matthew Perry fans get tearful as Charlie Puth performs heartful rendition of 'Friends' theme song during 'In Memoriam' segment at Emmys 2024

LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: An emotional tribute to Matthew Perry performed during the 'In Memoriam' segment of the 2024 Emmy Awards brought tears to the eyes of his fans, as per Daily Mail. 

Charlie Puth and singer-songwriter duo 'The War and Treaty' started their performance with the former's 'See You Again' and concluded with a stripped-down cover of 'I'll be there for you', the theme song from 'Friends' originally composed by the rock duo, The Rembrandts.

The segment also paid tribute to other late stars, including Norman Lear, Len Goodman, Andre Braugher, Lance Reddick, Paul Reubens, Barbara Walters, Angela Lansbury, and Kirstie Alley, among others. 

Soon after Puth's performance ended, a slide appeared, featuring Perry, who was found dead in the hot tub of his home on October 28, 2023. The Los Angeles County Coroner later revealed that one of the reasons behind the actor's death was the acute effects of ketamine.

Soon after Puth's touching tribute to Perry surfaced on the internet, fans couldn't help but leave heartfelt comments. 

One wrote, "The #Emmys honoring Matthew Perry like that 😭😭😭😭😭 He will always be there for us 🙏🏻🕊."

Another noted, "I was crying when they were singing “See You Again” & then “I’ll Be There For you”(Friends theme song)."

"This is beautiful," expressed a person, and someone else chimed in, "So touching. Great job."

A fan of Perry stated, "Thanks for the tears, Emmys! Matthew, I still thank you for the laughs."

"Charlie was the man for this," wrote one appreciating Puth's performance. 

Matthew Perry's 'Friends' co-stars paid tribute to him after his sudden death

Perry was widely recognized for his iconic portrayal of the humorous and sarcastic Chandler Bing on the hit sitcom 'Friends', which aired between 1994 and 2004. The actor's memorable performance spanned more than 200 episodes across the show's 10-season run on NBC.

Matt LeBlanc, known for his role as Joey Tribbiani on 'Friends', expressed his grief over Perry's death via an Instagram post. He shared a carousel of images along with a heartfelt note, saying, "Matthew, it is with a heavy heart I say goodbye. The times we had together are honestly among the favorite times of my life."

The actor's other co-star Courteney Cox also paid tribute, writing, "When you work with someone as closely as I did with Matthew, there are thousands of moments I wish I could share. For now, here's one of my favorites." 

Perry was buried at Lost Angeles' Forest Lawn Memorial Park on November 3, 2023, and the service was attended by his 'Friends' co-stars Jennifer Aniston, Cox, Lisa Kudrow, LeBlanc, and David Schwimmer.

After his death, in a joint statement, his co-stars noted, "We are all so utterly devastated by the loss of Matthew." 

Recently, at the 2024 Critics Choice Awards, Aniston urged fans to celebrate Perry's legacy, as per PEOPLE Magazine.
