Mel C makes rare confession about Victoria Beckham clash that nearly ended her 'Spice Girls' run
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Melanie 'Mel C' Chisholm recalled a moment from the early days of the 'Spice Girls' that nearly cost her a place in the iconic girl group during a recent appearance on 'The Louis Theroux Podcast.'
The singer reflected on a heated exchange with Victoria Beckham before the band's debut and explained how the incident shaped her approach to fame, control, and the personal struggles that followed throughout her years with the group and beyond.
Mel C feared losing 'Spice Girls' spot
During an appearance on the podcast, 'Sporty Spice' reflected on an incident that took place at the 1996 BRIT Awards, five months before the 'Spice Girls' released their debut single, 'Wannabe.'
Chisholm recalled, “Nobody in the public knew us, but in the industry people had started talking. And we were there, and we were sitting on a table with Lenny Kravitz, which obviously, for these young girls, it was this amazing night.”
She added that the group had been drinking champagne and “everyone was having fun.” However, as the group was leaving to find their car, things took an unexpected turn.
“We were just leaving, we were going to find our car, and whatever the situation was, I just turned around" and directed an expletive at Victoria, she recalled.
Chisholm did not reveal what prompted the remark toward Beckham but woke up the following morning to discover the incident had landed her in serious trouble.
She revealed that fellow bandmates Melanie Brown and Geri Halliwell told her they were “disgusted” with her behavior, while the group's manager called her into a meeting over the incident.
“I was told in no uncertain terms that if anything ever happened like that again, I would be gone,” she said, adding, “That completely freaked me out.”
“I went into terror because I thought I was gonna lose everything,” she continued. “Those dreams as a child, which now were a possibility, I might have ended it all up. And I thought it was very trivial as well.”
Mel C addresses 'Spice Girls' reunion hopes
Speaking previously to PEOPLE, Chisholm admitted the incident led her to self-police.
“A tiny little thing I didn’t think was that bad could have jeopardized my whole dream,” she said, adding, “So it made me really self-police. That got to the point of me being very controlling in different areas of my life. Losing control freaked me out.”
She also spoke openly about what she calls the “difficult parts” of her past ahead of the release of her autobiography, 'THE SPORTY ONE: My Life as a Spice Girl.' In an interview with the Daily Mail, she said she wanted to help young people be better prepared for the realities of fame.
Looking back on her years in one of the biggest-selling groups of the 1990s, Chisholm revealed she experienced clinical depression and an eating disorder, describing that period as a “mixed bag of emotions.”
“I was quite unwell for a few years,” Chisholm said, adding, “When I look back, I don't know physically how I did it; when you consider how little I lived on and how much exercise I was doing alongside a brutal schedule.”
Chisholm also confirmed there will not be a 'Spice Girls' reunion tour in 2026. During a March 17 appearance on Australia's 'The Smallzy Show,' she said, “No there is no reunion.”
However, she added, “We are communicating all the time. We want to do something. Who knows when, but I still feel very optimistic and I keep my fingers crossed that you will see the Spice Girls together at some point in the future.”
