Jana Kramer defends Adam Sandler as Taylor Swift-Travis Kelce's wedding officiant: 'He's a sweet man'
MANHATTAN, NEW YORK: Actress Jana Kramer has defended Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce's decision to have comedian and actor Adam Sandler officiate their Madison Square Garden wedding, calling the actor the perfect fit for the emotional role.
Speaking on her 'Whine Down' podcast, Kramer reflected on her experience working with Sandler and explained why his personality made him the perfect choice to officiate the ceremony. Her comments came after Swift's longtime publicist, Tree Paine, confirmed that Sandler officiated the couple's July 3 wedding.
Jana Kramer explains why Adam Sandler was the perfect officiant
On the July 11 episode of her 'Whine Down' podcast, Kramer addressed the reaction to Adam Sandler's role at the wedding. "Everyone was like, 'Oh, that's an interesting choice,'" she said before recalling that she met Sandler while filming the 2006 movie 'Click.'
Reflecting on their time together, she said, "It almost does make sense to me now because he does have that sentimental [personality] like, he's just such a sweet man. He really is, and he's a good man. So I could see him being really funny, but then also really grounded and sentimental."
The 'One Tree Hill' alum added that he is "very intentional when he speaks" and explained that the comedian is much quieter off-camera than audiences might expect.
"A lot of comedians you think they're going to be these very outwardly kind of crazy and wild, [and] he was so soft spoken," Kramer said, adding, "You know what I mean? Sweet and quiet."
The newlyweds are believed to have asked Sandler to take on the role after he and Kelce worked together on the 2025 film 'Happy Gilmore 2.' Kelce made a memorable cameo in the comedy, appearing in only an apron while being covered in honey by Puerto Rican rapper Bad Bunny.
Adam Sandler's friendship earned wedding officiant role
The couple exchanged vows in front of around 1,000 guests, including Selena Gomez and Gigi Hadid. Instead of a traditional bridal party, they chose Swift's brother, Austin Swift, as her "Man of Honor" and Kelce's brother, Jason Kelce, as the "Best Man."
They later made their first public appearance as husband and wife while attending Chiefs wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster's wedding. Sandler's involvement in the ceremony came nearly a year after he filmed 'Happy Gilmore 2' with Kelce.
During a January 2025 appearance on ESPN's 'The Pat McAfee Show,' Kelce praised the actor, saying, "Working with Happy Gilmore himself, the Sandman and Happy Productions, it was off the chain."
He added that Sandler "is every bit as cool off the screen as he is on the screen, and that was a dream come true. That was awesome."
Around the film's July 2025 release, Sandler also spoke warmly about Kelce during an interview with Entertainment Tonight. "Travis is such a gentle, nice guy, and funny as hell," he said, adding that the NFL star reminded him of his high school friends. Sandler also described Kelce as "a great actor and a great human" and "a stud."
The actor also praised Swift, saying, "Taylor is incredible. Taylor is so damn nice to my family and has always been." He noted that his daughters, Sadie and Sunny, had met the singer several times and that she had always been "ridiculously nice to them and warm."
