WASHINGTON, DC: First lady Melania Trump faced flak on the internet following her speech about "love" at the International Women of Courage awards ceremony on Tuesday, April 1.

She defined courage as "strength that is based in love" while speaking to guests and award recipients at the State Department for the annual event, per OK! Magazine.

Talking about the honorees, Melania Trump said, "These extraordinary women illuminate the transformative power of love in shaping our world."

The first lady continued, "Their journeys remind us that true courage is born from a deep commitment to others, showing the love fuels the call for justice."

During her speech, Melania connected with the award winners on a personal level by sharing the struggles she had overcome in her own life to relate to the diverse group.

She said, "I have harnessed the power of love as a source of strength during challenging times. Love has inspired me to embrace forgiveness, nurture empathy, and exhibit bravery in the face of unforeseen obstacles."

During her speech, Melania also spotlighted Georgiana Pascu of Romania, an honoree, whom she used as an example of a person who "loves in action", per OK Magazine.



 

Melania explained, "Georgiana is a 'watchdog' who defends the dignity of Romanians whose voices cannot be heard."

Notably, Georgiana advocates for the rights of institutionalized children and adults with psychosocial and intellectual disabilities, according to the outlet.

Melania added, "Thanks to Georgiana’s brave work, dozens of offenders have been charged with human trafficking, exploitation and even organized crime."

The first lady donned a bold leopard print dress during her appearance at the event. 

Moreover, this marked the fifth year Melania participated in the awards ceremony, which was established in 2007 by then-Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, per The Hill.

During her speech, she focused on love being a "source of strength" in the face of challenges.

She added during the speech, "Let their stories motivate us to take courageous steps, knowing that each act of love can spark a ripple of transformation."

Internet trolls Melania Trump for her speech about 'love'

Several internet users trolled Melania Trump following her speech about "love" at the International Women of Courage awards ceremony.

A user wrote on X, "She’s so…insincere, that her efforts to appear sincere only emphasize the opposite," while one added, "She seriously looks like she's about to go full Homelander."



 



 

A person also stated, "She has harnessed the power of love. Maybe she should set it free?" whereas another mentioned, "She thinks 'valor' is a fabric, doesn’t she?"



 



 

A user also wrote, "If I were her, I wouldn’t do speeches anymore," while one commented, "There's no soul behind those eyes."



 



 

A person added, "Horrible. Painful to see how she lost all trace of candour, self-assurance, and femininity."
