Meryl Streep praises Lady Gaga’s performance in ‘The Devil Wears Prada 2’
Streep described Lady Gaga’s performance as “divine,” praising her improvisational skills, musical ability, and acting range. The pop star appears as herself in a cameo set during Milan Fashion Week, where she shares a dramatic and humorous scene with Streep’s character, Miranda Priestly.
“She’s hilarious, game, and ready to improvise endlessly, and an amazing, amazing musician and an artist of the first caliber. Great actress. I loved working with her,” Streep said. Gaga has also contributed three songs to the film’s soundtrack.
Co-star Anne Hathaway also shared her thoughts, saying, “I want to mention one other thing about her that I was really delighted by, I’m so touched at how humble she is. Just really sweet to everyone, very soft-spoken. She cared so much, and there was zero attitude. There was zero like, ‘You get three takes, and then I’m out.’ She was on, I think, a world tour at the time!"
"She was just gorgeous in every way a person can be,” she added. During a recent appearance on Heart Breakfast, Streep revealed that she personally called Gaga to invite her to take part in the film.
She remarked, “That was me. Thank you. You’re welcome,” she told co-star Emily Blunt, who was surprised to hear how it happened. “I just said, ‘Would you do this? Because it’s going to be really good.’ And she said, ‘Yeah!’” Streep said while snapping her fingers.
She continued, “Just like that. She’s on her world tour, which lasted a year, playing to 75,000 people in a stadium, and just flew off and did us."
Lady Gaga’s cameo in ‘The Devil Wears Prada 2’ impresses cast and creators
Streep and Gaga first met at ‘SNL 50’ last February and quickly formed a connection, with both expressing interest in working together. Director David Frankel later revealed that the collaboration came together soon after, when he asked Streep if she would reach out to her new acquaintance.
Streep agreed, obtained Gaga’s contact through a mutual friend, and personally made the call. Frankel noted Gaga’s strong acting ability, explaining that the team carefully considered how to craft a scene that would feel dramatic and meaningful.
Costume designer Molly Rogers also described the creative process behind Gaga’s look, sharing that it was a collaborative effort involving ideas from both sides, resulting in a final design that combined multiple elements.
Rogers further admitted she was overwhelmed meeting the 16-time Grammy winner, describing herself as unusually starstruck despite regularly working with actors like Blunt and Hathaway. She recalled attending Gaga’s concert and feeling intimidated by her presence, adding humorously that she found herself at a loss when Gaga asked about the direction of her look.
The original ‘The Devil Wears Prada’ premiered in June 2006, earning $27.5 million domestically during its opening weekend and finishing with $125 million in domestic box office revenue, figures that rise to $45 million and $204 million respectively when adjusted for inflation.
