Anne Hathaway says ‘nobody lost their jobs’ over size inclusivity push on ‘Devil Wears Prada 2’
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Actress Anne Hathaway has addressed recent claims surrounding casting decisions in ’The Devil Wears Prada 2,’ clarifying that reports about models being dismissed over body type are inaccurate.
The actress responded to what she described as “misinformation” circulating online and emphasized that no jobs were lost in the process. Her remarks come amid broader discussions about inclusivity in the fashion industry as portrayed in the upcoming sequel.
Anne Hathaway clarifies ‘Devil Wears Prada 2’ casting claims
In a cover story for Harper’s Bazaar published last month, co-star Meryl Streep revealed that Hathaway approached the film’s producers on set to advocate for casting more size-inclusive models after they attended actual fashion shows during Milan Fashion Week.
Streep said she was “Struck by how not only beautiful and young—everyone seems young to me—but alarmingly thin the models were… I thought that all had been addressed years ago. Anne clocked it too,” she added, saying, “and she made a beeline to the producers about it, securing promises that the models in the show that we were putting together for our film would not be so skeletal! She’s a stand-up girl.”
Following those remarks, Hathaway has repeatedly faced questions about her role in promoting inclusivity during the film’s production.
“It was just this kind of quick thing that happened on set and now it’s become a much bigger story,” Hathaway recently told ‘Good Morning America,’ as she addressed the growing attention around the incident. She further clarified that she never once advocated for models to be fired from the production, countering interpretations that had circulated on social media.
She further said, “I do want to mention there’s a little misinformation getting out there right now that people were fired because of the size inclusivity and that just didn’t happen, Nobody lost their jobs, in fact, it created more jobs… It’s so hard because I can’t say what the scene is about, but there’s a song that Lady Gaga wrote and it’s a beautiful, amazing song."
Hathaway continued, “Isn’t it better when you see so many different types of bodies up there with that?”
Anne Hathaway reflects on expanding representation in key scene for ‘Devil Wears Prada 2’
Speaking to Variety at the ‘The Devil Wears Prada 2’ world premiere in New York City, Hathaway spoke for the first time about Streep’s revelation. “I had noticed that we had beautiful models on set, and a lot of them were more traditionally model-sized,” she said.
Hathaway continued, “I knew what the context of the scene was, and I thought the scene would be so much more enjoyable for the audience if we had just a wider range of bodies on display, because all different shapes are beautiful.”
“I just went to the producers and I asked that question: ‘Don’t you think the scene would be stronger if we had a more inclusive approach to sizing?’” She added.
She closed her remarks by stating, “They looked up and were so sad that they hadn’t thought about it. I think they were so locked in, just kind of going with the flow. But as soon as they saw it, they were the ones who made it happen in like an hour.”
Hathaway continues to rank among Hollywood’s most in-demand actors, with a packed slate this year that includes ‘Mother Mary,’ ‘The Devil Wears Prada 2,’ Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey,’ ‘Verity’ based on a novel by Colleen Hoover, and ‘The End of Oak Street.’
