Met Gala 2024 Worst Dressed: From Doja Cat's wet sheet to Lana Del Rey’s tree dress
11 worst-dressed stars at the Met Gala 2024
Arguably the biggest night in fashion, the Met Gala also serves as a good example of how disastrously a desperate attempt to make a statement with one's appearance can go when several celebrities walk the red carpet. The theme for this year's event is The Garden of Time, which corresponds with the new exhibition Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion. Shortly after the event began, outrageous hairstyles, see-through outfits, and ludicrous efforts at haute couture outfits were all displayed for the cameras.
1. Ayo Edebiri
'The Bear' actress Ayo Edebiri wore a custom floral, backless column dress by Loewe at the Met Gala 2024, per The Hollywood Reporter. The halter-neck dress was adorned with 3D applique flowers that were artfully placed to look in bloom, and it was covered in a floral lace that was hand-painted and hand-embroidered. It would have been a beautiful floral outfit if the colors were a little more muted and the effect had a little more subtlety.
2. Doja Cat
Rapper and singer Doja Cat had one towel wrapped around her waist and one around her head when she arrived at the event. However, she later threw them aside to expose a translucent, white, see-through Vetements T-shirt outfit that looked completely soaked, paired with sky-high platforms. Doja Cat made the very strange choice to attend the Met Gala wearing a drenched white T-shirt, forcing her to conceal her chest with her arm.
3. Dua Lipa
Dressed in a custom Marc Jacobs look, Dua Lipa went all out in her revealing black lace outfit, which was more of a beach cover-up than a black tie dress. The outfit's skirt left little room for interpretation—it was a glaringly transparent piece of material that had been twisted around her waist. And there was the corset-style top with lace covering, which reminded viewers a lot of an old Victoria's Secret outfit.
4. Lizzo
Victor Weinsanto provided the Grammy-winning singer with a handmade gown and headpiece. The ensemble included a sleeveless, structured dress with boning extending down the bodice and skirt. Although viewers believe the vase-like shape is intentional, the headpiece is just too gimmicky to be stunning. The design is not up to the standard of the Met Gala, and the colors are a little gloomy.
5. Kylie Jenner
Kylie Jenner wore an Oscar de la Renta custom-made by the house's co-designers Laura Kim and Fernando Garcia. The soft rosewater-colored, double-faced satin dress with a cinched waist, a trumpet skirt, and a cone-shaped bra, all appear to be something from a bridal store's clearance section. It appears even more odd when one considers the few fascinating aspects, such as the lengthy train and the pointed bust.
6. Amelia Gray Hamlin
Model Amelia Gray Hamlin created quite a stir when she showed up on the red carpet decked out in an Undercover 3D creation that looked like a blow-up yellow minidress full of flowers. The strapless style included a tight-fitting clear plastic bodice coated in yellow tulle fabric, a strapless neckline, and a vast skirt resembling a balloon. Her skirt was then filled with faux violet roses before being covered in another thin layer of yellow tulle.
7. Lana Del Rey
Lana Del Rey also made the list of celebrities with the worst outfits, donning an odd tree-inspired ensemble with a massive mosquito net covering her face. The 'Video Games' singer walked the moss-inspired carpet wearing a veiled cream Alexander McQueen sheath gown designed by Sean McGirr, who drew influence from Swiss sculptor Alberto Giacometti. Wearing a floor-length beige strapless dress with dazzling thorny stems that stretched up its full length and ended far above her head, the chart-topper seemed like she was dressed like a tree.
8. Kelsea Ballerini
The flowery theme was overdone by singer Kelsea Ballerini, whose embroidered gown appeared to have been left under a blooming tree for a few hours before she showed up on the red carpet. Ballerini's translucent Michael Kors dress has orange and pink appliques applied in interesting ways. Custom Simon G jewelry set with orange and yellow sapphires and diamonds completed Ballerini's ensemble.
9. Gwendoline Christie
'Game of Thrones' icon Gwendoline Christie looked more like a 'maniacal magician' than a high-end fashion model with her peculiar cape and perplexingly voluminous hairstyle. Dressed in a blood-red gown and a translucent black cape by Maison Margiela, Christie looked like a reverse version of 'Red Riding Hood' for the Met Gala 'Garden of Time' theme.
10. Jessica Serfaty
Actress and influencer Jessica Serfaty donned a custom Dolce & Gabbana floral look. Her flower-adorned gown looked like it was made for a high school class project due to the odd 3-D flowers that were adhered all over it. Not only did she expose a sheer neon pink underlayer beneath the gaudy top layer, but she also flaunted her exceedingly skimpy silver bra, which is far from the refined elegance that the Met Gala is supposed to embody.
11. Chloe Sevigny
Chloe Sevigny's outfit by Dilara Findikoglu was the perfect example of the Sleeping Beauties motif, with a dress constructed from leftover pieces and shards of Victorian clothing. Furthermore, viewers must give her credit for donning a historically accurate haircut that isn't exactly the newest or most fashionable in 2024. However, everything seemed gimmicky in the end and it's also not very attractive.
