MADISON, WISCONSIN: Michael Cole, the beloved actor, best known for his iconic role as Pete Cochran in the 1960s police drama 'The Mod Squad', has died at the age of 84 on Tuesday, December 10. Born on July 3, 1940, in Madison, Wisconsin, Cole’s breakout role catapulted him to fame and made him a household name. 

Notably, Cole was the last surviving member of The Mod Squad, following the deaths of Peggy Lipton in 2019 at age 72 and Clarence Williams III in 2021 at age 81.

According to a statement from his representative, the actor died peacefully, surrounded by loved ones, after living a full and vibrant life. He leaves behind his wife, Shelley, children, and a wide circle of family, friends, and admirers who will forever cherish his legacy.

The statement also reflected on Cole’s personal life, beyond his career: "Michael Cole will be remembered for his warm and generous spirit." 

It continued, "Known among friends and family for his wit, charm, and boundless compassion, he brought joy to every room he entered." 

Further sharing how Cole made others feel special, the release noted: "A storyteller at heart, he had a way of making those around him feel special, often regaling them with anecdotes from his Hollywood days or sharing wisdom from his remarkable journey."

The tribute concluded, "While his loss is deeply felt, his contributions to the arts and his enduring kindness ensure his memory will live on."

Michael Cole’s role as Pete Cochran in ‘The Mod Squad’

According to the official logline of 'The Mod Squad', the crime drama followed three undercover hippie cops with "checkered pasts" as they infiltrated the counterculture to bring down adult criminals preying on unsuspecting young people in Southern California.

In the series, Cole played one of the "youth squad" members: a rebellious character "whose wealthy parents kicked him out of their posh Beverly Hills home; Linc, a survivor of the ghetto; and Julie, a former hooker arrested for vagrancy".

'The Mod Squad' aired for five seasons, from 1968 to 1973, and also starred Peggy Lipton and Clarence Williams III.

Beyond the crime drama, Cole's portrayal often addressed themes of racial and social justice, as the show navigated contemporary social issues, as per People.

After the series, Cole appeared in various other projects, including 'Murder', 'She Wrote, Fantasy Island', 'Wonder Woman', and 'The Love Boat'. In 1990, he took on the role of adult Henry Bowes in the Stephen King mini-series It, and also appeared in 'General Hospital' as Harlan Barrett.

The renowned actor, known for his role in crime dramas, also chronicled his decade-long Hollywood career in his memoir, 'I Played the White Guy'.

Cole's death comes just days after the death of Mark Withers, known for his roles in 'Stranger Things' and 'Dynasty', as well as Tony Todd, famous for his work in 'Candyman'.
