WASHINGTON, DC: Liberal comedian Michael Ian Black took a jab at California Governor Gavin Newsom during a recent September episode of 'Have I Got News For You US', the CNN-aired panel show, criticizing the governor’s trolling social media campaign against President Donald Trump.

Newsom has ramped up his online presence in recent weeks, adopting a combative, meme-driven style that mirrors Trump. The strategy has been read by some as an early signal of his ambitions for the 2028 presidential race.

Michael Ian Black says politicians are reduced to cartoon characters

While some have praised Newsom’s online antics, others see them as a waste of time. Black was blunt in his criticism.

“I hate this. I know I’m in the minority on this. I hate that he’s doing this. Because I hate that we’re reducing our politicians to cartoon characters,” he said.

“I don’t give a s**t how well you control online. Do your f*****g job. That’s what I care about,” he added.

Rep Jasmine Crockett defended Newsom as her “partner” and argued that while these antics may seem “immature” and “ignorant,” that is entirely the point.

She said, “So yes, I think it is necessary because we are putting a good old mirror up in your face to make you understand that y’all been supporting a real ignorant fool this whole time.”

Meanwhile, comedian Dave Foley sparked laughter on the panel when he quipped, “I think Michael’s antique desire for integrity is adorable."

Black contrasted Newsom’s approach with Illinois Governor JB Pritzker, whom he praised for making the same political points “in a way that is mature, intelligent, rational, [and] reasonable,” rather than chasing attention.

Co-host Amber Ruffin added that Democrats don’t need to preach to their own base. “Those people already vote Democrat,” she said. “We need the idiot votes. Let’s get stupid. Let’s do stupid memes. Let’s have cartoons."
