WASHINGTON, DC: Authorities have identified a suspect involved in a shooting near the White House that prompted a swift response from the US Secret Service, underscoring ongoing security vigilance in one of the most heavily monitored areas in the country.

According to officials, 45-year-old Texas resident Michael Marx was the individual allegedly carrying a firearm near the White House complex on Monday, May 4, as per Fox News. The situation escalated when Secret Service officers attempted to approach him after observing what was described as a visible indication of a weapon.

Suspect allegedly opened fire during confrontation

Secret Service Deputy Director Matt Quinn said trained surveillance personnel initially detected what appeared to be a firearm imprint, prompting officers to make contact. At that point, the suspect reportedly attempted to flee on foot before drawing a weapon.

“Upon making contact, that individual fled briefly on foot, withdrew a firearm and fired in the direction of our agents and officers,” Quinn said during a press briefing.

Officers immediately returned fire, engaging the suspect and bringing the situation under control. The rapid response by Secret Service personnel highlighted the agency’s preparedness and constant monitoring of potential threats in the area.

Bystander injured as investigation continues

During the exchange, a juvenile was struck and sustained non-life-threatening injuries, officials confirmed. Emergency responders quickly provided medical attention, and the individual is expected to recover.

Authorities also noted that Vice President JD Vance’s motorcade had passed through the vicinity shortly before the incident, though early assessments indicate the shooting was not connected to his movement or any specific high-level target.

Marx was transported to a nearby hospital following the confrontation. His current condition has not been publicly disclosed, and officials have not yet announced formal charges as the investigation remains ongoing.

Security remains a top priority

Law enforcement agencies continue to review the circumstances surrounding the incident, including whether the suspect had any specific intent or target. Officials emphasized that the area surrounding the White House is under constant surveillance, with personnel trained to detect even subtle signs of potential threats.

Quinn declined to speculate on whether the suspect was attempting to target President Donald Trump, stating that investigators would work to determine motive as more information becomes available.

The incident comes amid heightened awareness around security in Washington, DC, with authorities maintaining a strong presence and readiness to respond to emerging threats. Officials reiterated that their priority remains the safety of the public and the protection of national leadership, with ongoing efforts to ensure swift action in any situation that poses a risk.
