LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Actress Michelle Pfeiffer is reflecting on her time portraying Catwoman in Tim Burton’s 1992 film 'Batman Returns', describing the role as a career highlight and recalling the unique filmmaking experience behind bringing the iconic character to life.

Speaking in a recent interview with Deadline on Friday, June 5, Pfeiffer reflected on what made the production unique, explained how the filmmaking process differed from modern superhero productions, and discussed why the character continues to hold a special place in her career while revisiting the possibility of returning to the iconic role.

Michelle Pfeiffer recalls iconic Catwoman role

Pfeiffer starred as Catwoman opposite Michael Keaton's Batman in 'Batman Returns'. During her conversation with the outlet, she described the experience of playing the character as “a dream come true.”

She also explained that the production process was very different from that of contemporary superhero films, particularly those produced within the Marvel franchise.

“And a very different process than Marvel movies. And they're a whole different machine,” Pfeiffer said.

She noted that 'Batman Returns' felt much more intimate because the film relied on practical filmmaking techniques rather than extensive visual effects.

“Batman was actually very intimate and everything was not, you know ... there weren't really special effects no CGI. It was all in real time. You know, the sets were there. I don't remember there being any green screen,” she said.

According to Pfeiffer, the production felt similar to making a conventional film despite its comic book subject matter. “So, you know, that was just like making a regular movie dressed up [and] weird,” she added.

Pfeiffer ultimately landed the role after Annette Bening, who had originally been cast as Catwoman, withdrew from the project because of her pregnancy. Several other high-profile performers, including Cher and Madonna, were reportedly considered for the role before it was awarded to her.

Pfeiffer willing to reprise Catwoman role

Following the success of 'Batman Returns', discussions emerged about a standalone Catwoman film starring Pfeiffer. According to reports cited by the New York Times, the project was considered after the film's 1992 release.

However, the proposed movie never moved forward. Despite that, Pfeiffer has previously said she would be willing to reprise the character if the opportunity ever arose.

During an appearance with former Today co-anchor Hoda Kotb in April 2019, the actress reflected on the possibility of returning to the role.

“I mean, that would be incredible,” Pfeiffer said, adding, “I was sad when that ended. I was just getting comfortable with everything that I had to deal with and beginning to have some fun with it, and then it was over.”

Today, she stars in the Apple TV+ series 'Margo’s Got Money Troubles'. In the show, she plays Shyanne, a former Hooters waitress who shares daughter Margo, played by Elle Fanning, with ex-pro wrestler Jinx, portrayed by Nick Offerman.

The series also marks the first time Pfeiffer has worked with her husband, showrunner David E Kelley.
