GRAND HAVEN TOWNSHIP, MICHIGAN: A Michigan father fatally shot his wife and their six children before setting their home on fire in what authorities are investigating as a murder-suicide, officials said after identifying all eight family members found dead inside the burning residence.

The Ottawa County Sheriff's Office identified the adults as Kristopher Karolkiewicz, 47, and Amanda Karolkiewicz, 39. Authorities did not release the names of the children but said the victims included four boys, aged 15, 12, 11 and 5, and two 11-year-old girls, two of whom had been adopted.

Investigators believe Kristopher Karolkiewicz killed his family before taking his own life. All eight victims sustained gunshot wounds, prompting a suspicious death investigation.

According to the Ottawa County Sheriff's Office, investigators believe Kristopher Karolkiewicz intentionally set the fire in multiple locations throughout the house after carrying out the killings.

"The cause and origin of the residential fire remains under investigation by Michigan State Police arson investigators. However, preliminary indications are that the fire was intentionally set in numerous places throughout the interior of the residence," the sheriff's office said in a statement.

Officials added that the family's pets also died in the fire and smoke.

The Grand Haven Fire Department first responded between 8.30 am and 9 am Friday after reports of smoke in the area but could not locate the source. Firefighters returned shortly before 11.45 am after receiving reports of white smoke coming from a home on the 14900 block of Riverside Trail, where they discovered the victims.

Authorities said there are no additional suspects in the case.

Loved ones mourn devastating loss

Amanda Karolkiewicz had recently returned from a trip to China with her two adopted daughters. According to her TikTok account, the family visited Shanghai Disneyland during their vacation before returning to Michigan in mid-July.

Following the tragedy, Amanda's stepfather, Steve Lawwill, shared an emotional tribute, saying the family was "so grateful for the joy they brought into our life" and that they were "just so shattered."

The sheriff's office continues to work with Michigan State Police arson investigators as they determine the exact cause and origin of the fire, though officials said preliminary evidence indicates it was deliberately set after the shootings.
