WASHINGTON, DC: Former vice president Mike Pence praised President Joe Biden’s decision not to seek reelection and urged leaders in both parties to project calm after recent political turmoil.

Pence highlighted the importance of unity to send a messge of strength and resolve to both American friends and enemies.

Mike Pence's gratitude to Joe Biden for putting 'national interests ahead of his own'

The statement comes in the view of Biden's announcement that he would not run for a second term amid mounting pressure from elected Democrats for him to step aside.

“President Joe Biden made the right decision for our country and I thank him for putting the interests of our Nation ahead of his own,” Pence posted on X.

He continued by urging leaders to project calm and send a message of strength to America’s friends and enemies alike.

“After the assassination attempt on former president Donald Trump and President Biden’s decision to end his campaign, now is a time for leaders in both parties to project calm," he added.

He said it was the time to "send a message of strength and resolve to America’s friends and enemies alike that, whatever the state of our politics, the American people are strong and our American military stands ready to defend our freedom and our vital national interests anywhere in the world.”

Mike Pence decides not to endorse Donald Trump or Joe Biden

Pence, who served as Trump’s vice president for four years, has faced increasing criticism from the Republican Party base since he refused to reject the 2020 election results on January 6, 2021. After his unsuccessful 2024 presidential campaign, Pence stated he would not endorse Trump or Biden.

President Biden announced on Sunday afternoon, July 21, his decision not to run for a second term, saying, "I believe it is in the best interest of my party and the country for me to stand down and to focus solely on fulfilling my duties as President for the remainder of my term."

Shortly after his announcement, Biden endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris as the nominee. "Today I want to offer my full support and endorsement for Kamala to be the nominee of our party this year. Democrats — it’s time to come together and beat Trump. Let’s do this," he wrote on X.

Harris expressed her gratitude and determination in a statement: “I am honored to have the President’s endorsement and my intention is to earn and win this nomination.”

Internet reacts to Mike Pences remarks on Joe Biden dropping from reelection campaign

Pence’s remarks sparked a wide range of reactions on social media. Some users commended his message while others slammed him for praising Biden.

"A surprisingly sane post from Pence," wrote one and another stated, "A commendable message of unity and strength. In challenging times, America's resilience shines through."

However, Pence also faced harsh criticism. One user wrote, "We are only in this mess because of you, so shut the f*** up," while another commented, "This is why we consider you a traitor, Mike. F*** off."

Amid the polarized responses, some viewed Pence’s post as an indirect praise for Biden, with one writing, "Praising Biden, pathetic."

More users praised him for his tone of unity, with one stating, "Completely honest and sane post of unity. What a shame that others can’t follow suit."

There were also suggestions that Biden’s decision might not have been entirely voluntary, with one user insisting, "It wasn’t his decision. He was hell-bent on staying in." Another user advised Pence to "Endorse Trump."

Despite the varied opinions, one user summed up a more positive sentiment: "That is actually a gracious statement. I am surprised."
