Mindy Kaling raves over Meghan Markle’s party hosting advice but Internet finds it ‘so out of touch’

LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Mindy Kaling gushed over Meghan Markle's expertise at throwing children's parties during a chat with Time. But 'The Office' star was labeled "out of touch" by critics for her comments.

Kaling, who appears on Markle's upcoming Netflix show, 'With Love, Meghan', said she met the duchess when she was on maternity leave after welcoming her third child, per Daily Mail.

Mindy Kaling said during the interview, "I think a misconception about Meghan is that she’s in any way fussy or has expectations of fanciness. She really is a down-to-earth person who knows a lot of fun tricks to make entertaining and cooking easier."

The 'Late Night' star was asked if she picked up any hosting tips from Markle, to which she said, "Spoiler alert: I did. The theme was throwing a party for children. I love cooking, but I’m really not good at entertaining. I don’t know anything about how you’re not supposed to use overhead lighting when people come over. You’re supposed to use little lamps."

Kaling added, "But Meghan just knows how to do that stuff. For kids’ parties I usually just go to the party supply store and get paper things, which I don’t judge and neither does she. But it was fun to learn simple ways to do a homemade kids’ party."

She also mentioned that Markle gifted her a "basket of fresh produce and homemade jam and hot sauce because she knew I loved hot sauce".

"She’s a very generous woman who knew I needed a break," said Kaling.

Notably, the Duchess of Sussex recently announced that she was renaming her lifestyle venture American Riveria Orchard to As Ever.

She wrote in the caption of her Instagram video, "I'm thrilled to introduce you to As Ever — a brand that I created and have poured my heart into."

She added that the launch will coincide with the release of her new cooking show on Netflix on March 4, per the outlet.

Several social media users slammed Mindy Kaling as she raved about Meghan Markle's expertise at throwing children's parties.

Royal News Network's X account took a jibe at Kaling and wrote, "Sure, that advice works, if you own a $15 million mansion! But for the average Joe, they wouldn’t do that. Gosh, this thing sounds so out of touch!!" 

A user added, "Totally clueless. Do they not understand how silly and ridiculous that sounds? Why can't you use overhead lighting? I need to see what the kids are doing. Meghan Markle doesn't have a maternal bone in her body."

A person also stated, "You’re not supposed to use overhead lighting? You’re supposed to use little lamps? Is this a joke?"

Another mentioned, "Sorry, yes, we have lamps everywhere and use them instead of the big overhead ones which cost more to run."
