MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA: Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara openly questioned the actions of the ICE agent who fatally shot Renee Nicole Good during an interview on '60 Minutes' aired on Sunday, January 18.
During the interview, he argued that the agent did not follow basic steps that trained officers are taught for approaching vehicles. His comments also raised concerns about other tactics employed by federal agents during the incidentexplained, emphasizing that proper procedures are essential to protect both officers and civilians.
Brian O’Hara questions ICE agent’s conduct in Renee Good shooting
O’Hara stated in the interview that he has watched video clips of the incident and came away questioning why the ICE agent Jonathan Ross was in front of Renee Good’s SUV just before the shooting occurred.
O’Hara said, “It’s not clear to me why he appears to be in the path of the vehicle more than once,” and stressed that in any law enforcement encounter involving a vehicle, there are very basic steps officers are trained to use to ensure safety and de-escalate situations.
He explained that those basic steps are part of standard training for approaching vehicles, and he believes they were violated in this case. He expressed concern over how the situation was handled and emphasized that proper procedures are central to safe outcomes in law enforcement operations.
Correspondent Cecilia Vega said the shooting has become a national “Rorschach test,” with some Americans viewing it as a senseless killing and others seeing it as an officer defending his life.
Vega also noted that Vice President JD Vance blamed Good for the shooting the day after it happened. She also mentioned that Homeland Security officials accused Good and her partner of “stalking” immigration officers. However, Vega did not reference DHS’s released footage showing Good blocking traffic for three minutes before agents approached her.
Brian O’Hara on ground realities and ICE actions
It was also reported that the ICE agent, Jonathan Ross, suffered internal bleeding after being struck by Good’s vehicle just before he fired his weapon. O’Hara also said he supports targeted, precise pre‑planned operations against violent offenders, calling those operations “a good thing.”
However, he suggested a disconnect between federal enforcement policies and local realities: "But I’m concerned that people in the [Trump] administration don’t understand the reality of what is happening on the street.”
O’Hara also highlighted that, "the city’s 911 system is overwhelmed by complaints about immigration enforcement. In one case, the person was removed from a vehicle and the car wasn't even placed in park and it was rolling down the roadway."
While walking and talking with Vega during the interview, the 60 Minutes crew also captured a heckler who shouted at O’Hara, calling him a “pig” and accusing him of enabling ICE. He responded, “People have a right to say disrespectful things… however, they cannot physically obstruct law enforcement from performing a function. Those things are illegal.”
