NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: Jennifer Hudson's latest courtside appearance at a New York Knicks game took an unexpected turn when a basketball flew towards her, knocking her glasses off.

The 'Dreamgirls' star, 43, was sitting next to her boyfriend, Common, when the incident happened, leading to a moment that quickly went viral.



 

Common showed quick reflexes but accidentally hit Jennifer Hudson in the face 

During the game on Tuesday, March 4, Knicks player Miles McBride attempted to grab the ball, which ended up flying towards Jennifer Hudson.

Common reacted quickly, attempting to block it with his hand, but instead accidentally hit Hudson’s head with his elbow, sending her glasses tumbling.

The ball appeared to glance off Hudson’s head just before Common tried to deflect it, causing an awkward moment.

TNT play-by-play announcer Ian Eagle reacted on the broadcast, saying, "Protect Jennifer Hudson," as per Today.

TNT analyst Greg Anthony commented on the incident, adding, "Oh no, those look real expensive, too," referring to Hudson’s glasses.

Eagle continued, "And Common is making sure everybody's OK."

As the broadcast replayed the moment, Anthony questioned, "Did he protect her?" to which Eagle responded, "He tried. He actually banged the glasses."

McBride quickly checked on Hudson, while she attempted to shake off the shock. She was seen mouthing the word "Wow" as she processed what had just happened.

As the moment played out, Eagle continued with a joke about Miles McBride, saying, "I don’t think Miles McBride is going to be invited on the ‘The Jennifer Hudson Show'."

He then added, "And that is considered a Common foul," making a pun on the rapper's name.

Hudson and Common, 52, have been open about their relationship.

In a January 2024 episode of her talk show, the rapper hinted at dating someone with "an EGOT" and an Oscar for her first film, clearly referring to Hudson.

She expressed her happiness in the relationship, while Common described it as "a happy place for me," as per USA Today.

Internet jokes Jennifer Hudson is 'tryna figure out who to sue'

Social media users were quick to react to the incident, with some making jokes about the situation.

"Jennifer was about to cry," one person wrote on X. Another added, "It looks like Common actually knocked it off deflecting it..."




 

One user joked about the risks of sitting courtside, saying, "The perils of sitting front row and not watching the game."



 

Another user referenced Common’s past role in a basketball movie, writing, "Common played a basketball player in a movie so it looks bad that he couldn’t even catch the ball."
