WASHINGTON, DC: President Donald Trump is facing growing pressure to end the war in Iran after a new poll found nearly seven in 10 Americans want the conflict wrapped up as quickly as possible.

Despite growing public support for ending the war, the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) report on April 2 said prospects for a quick resolution remain limited. The think tank said the US and Iran are pursuing competing objectives, with Washington focused on neutralizing Iran’s nuclear and proxy capabilities while Tehran is fighting for regime survival and seeking to restore access through the Strait of Hormuz.

Poll shows broad support for ending Iran war as quickly as possible

According to a new Economist/YouGov poll, 68% of respondents said the United States “should make a deal to end the war in Iran as quickly as possible.”

Just 11% disagreed, while 21% said they were unsure.

The findings come as the conflict has stretched beyond three months, increasing strain on the global economy and putting pressure on US alliances.

The same survey found only 28% backed the conflict itself, while 60% opposed it.

The Economist/YouGov poll was conducted from May 29 through June 1 among 1,604 respondents and had a margin of error of plus or minus 3.5 percentage points.

For Trump, the numbers present a challenge as frustration over the war increasingly overlaps with concerns about its economic impact.

Rising gas prices add economic pressure

One of the most visible effects of the conflict has been higher fuel costs.

Fighting around the Strait of Hormuz, a critical route for global oil shipments, has contributed to rising energy prices.

According to AAA, the average price of a gallon of regular gasoline in the United States stood at about $4.24 on Thursday afternoon.

That is up significantly from $3.14 during the same period last year.

The war has also continued despite ongoing discussions about a possible negotiated settlement, with both Washington and Tehran maintaining positions that have complicated efforts to secure an agreement.

The poll suggests many Americans want the conflict to end quickly, even as the terms of any potential deal remain unresolved.

House war powers vote creates second front for Trump

Public dissatisfaction was followed by a political setback on Capitol Hill this week.

On Wednesday, June 3, House lawmakers passed legislation aimed at forcing Trump to end the war against Iran.

The measure cleared the chamber by a narrow 215-208 vote.

Four Republicans — Reps Thomas Massie of Kentucky, Brian Fitzpatrick of Pennsylvania, Tom Barrett of Michigan, and Warren Davidson of Ohio — joined Democrats in supporting the legislation.

Trump blasted the effort after the vote, calling it a “meaningless” move and describing the Republicans who supported it as “bad.” He also asked, “Who would do such an unpatriotic thing?”
