New York Jets say it was 'important to have this discussion now' with Aaron Rodgers
The New York Jets acquired Aaron Rodgers with the hope that the four-time NFL MVP would lead them to playoff success.
However, his tenure with the team was marred by injuries, including an Achilles tear suffered just four snaps into his debut against the Buffalo Bills in the 2023 season.
Rodgers spent the rest of that campaign recovering while backup quarterback Zach Wilson took charge, as per The Mirror.
He returned in the offseason, preparing to lead the team, but the 41-year-old quarterback finished the 2024 season with a 5-12 record, placing third in the AFC East.
Coach Aaron Glenn and general manager Darren Mougey released a statement confirming the team’s decision.
"Last week we met with Aaron and shared that our intention was to move in a different direction at quarterback," their statement read.
"It was important to have this discussion now to provide clarity and enable each of us the proper time to plan for our respective futures. We want to thank him for the leadership, passion, and dedication he brought to the organization and wish him success moving forward," the statement added.
Aaron Rodgers 'embodied all that it meant to be a New York Jet'
Aaron Rodgers had one season remaining on the three-year contract he signed with the Jets in July 2023.
If released that the team could face a $49 million cap hit in dead money, though designating him as a post-June 1 cut could allow them to split the impact across two seasons, as per CBC Sports.
Jets Chairman Woody Johnson also shared his thoughts on Rodgers’ departure.
"I personally want to thank Aaron for his time at the New York Jets," Johnson said.

"His arrival in 2023 was met with unbridled excitement and I will forever be grateful that he chose to join us to continue his Hall of Fame career," he added.
"From day one, he embodied all that it meant to be a New York Jet, embraced our fans, and immersed himself in our city," he continued.
"That is what I will remember most when I look back at his time here. He will always be welcome, and I wish him only the best in whatever he chooses to do next," he said.
Aaron Rodgers responds to retirement questions
Following the season finale, Aaron Rodgers has not confirmed whether he will continue playing or retire.
When asked if the Week 18 win over the Miami Dolphins could be his final game, he responded, "Yeah, of course."
He added, "This game has given me a lot. I've given a lot back to it, and I'm thankful for it."
"I won't be thinking about that on game day. I'll just be enjoying this. I'm trying to stay in the moment, but, of course, it's been a long career," Rodgers said.
"I'm really proud of what I've been able to be a part of, what I've been able to accomplish, and I'm also looking forward to a nice mental and physical rest," he added.
Internet says 'Jets just pulled the plug on Aaron Rodgers'
Aaron Rodgers’ exit sparked mixed reactions on social media. "Wow. The Jets just pulled the plug on the Aaron Rodgers experiment? After all that hype and just four snaps last season? Brutal. Now the big question - who’s their next move at QB?" one person wrote on X.
Another added, "And the Jets are adding $49M in dead cap money. Kind of nuts."

One more remarked, "Jets always making the wrong decision.. what a mess."
A user suggested, "I think it’s best that he needs to retire because no one doesn’t wanna sign a 41-year-old quarterback that’s past his prime. He had a great career in all but should’ve retired back after the 2022 season."
