New York Yankees express support for Brett Gardner after death of his teenage son: 'Our hearts are heavy'

HOLY HILL, SOUTH CAROLINA: Former New York Yankees star Brett Gardner has received support from his former teammates after he lost his 14-year-old son while they were on a vacation. Miller Gardner reportedly fell ill before his death.

The Major League Baseball (MLB) team posted an Instagram Story on Sunday, March 23, saying, “Our hearts are heavy, and the Yankees family is filled with grief after learning of the passing of Miller Gardner,” People reported.

The post continued, “It wasn't just Brett who literally grew up in this organization for more than 17 years — so did his wife, Jessica, and their two boys, Hunter and Miller.”

New York Yankees says they are grieving with the Gardners

“We grieve with Brett, Jessica, Hunter and their community of family and friends in mourning the loss of Miller,” the team stated, before adding, “Our love for the Gardner family is unconditional and absolute, and we will offer our enduring support while understanding their desire for privacy at this time.”

The statement from the New York Yankees came hours after the 41-year-old former baseball outfielder and his wife announced the tragedy via the Yankees’ social media pages, as per NBC Los Angeles.

The devastated parents said, “With heavy hearts we are saddened to announce the passing of our youngest son, Miller. He was 14 years old and has left us far too soon after falling ill along with several other family members while on vacation.”

They also shared that they “have so many questions and so few answers at this point, but we do know that he passed away peacefully in his sleep on the morning of Friday, March 21st.”

Describing Miller as “a beloved son,” they added, “He loved football, baseball, golf, hunting, fishing, his family and his friends. He lived life to the fullest every single day.”

“Our prayers go out to Miller's teammates and friends, as well as to all other families who have lost a child far too soon as we share their grief. Please respect our wishes for privacy as we mourn and search for healing,” the couple stated in the post.

Internet sends ‘thoughts and prayers to Gardner family’

Many people paid tribute to Brett Gardner's son Miller and sent their thoughts and prayers to the family on social media. 

One user on X wrote, “Oh my, so sad, parents should never have to bury their children. God Bless the entire Gardner family.”



 

Another wrote, “Words can’t describe how terrible this is. Life is so fragile… thoughts are with the Gardner family through this difficult time.”



 

One person posted, “Absolutely devastating. My heart goes out to the Gardner family. What an unimaginable tragedy.”



 

Another remarked, “Heartbroken. So young…RIP Miller Gardner. Thoughts and prayers to all Gardner family.”



 

“Condolences to the Gardner family. Beyond heartbreaking,” an individual wrote.
