WASHINGTON,DC: California Gov Gavin Newsom blasted Donald Trump for ranting about “too many non-working holidays.”

The comments, made during the Labor Day weekend, sparked debate over Trump’s stance on federal holidays and renewed scrutiny of his record on Juneteenth and Black History Month.

Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass announced a proposal which would expand the program to $750 million annually, a major increase from the $330 million currently allocated, amid sluggish film and TV productions in Hollywood and across California. Trump wrote on Truth Social: “Too many non-working holidays in America. It is costing our Country $BILLIONS OF DOLLARS to keep all of these businesses closed. The workers don't want it either! Soon we'll end up having a holiday for every once working day of the year. It must change if we are going to, MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!”

Newsom fired back on X with a single line: “Donald Trump thinks you should be working today.”

Internet accuses Newsom of twisting Trump's holiday comment

Some noted that the screenshot Newsom shared came from June 19, 2025, Juneteenth, a federal holiday established in 2021. While Trump did not mention a specific date in his rant, critics linked it to his shifting positions on federal observances.

Many online users jumped in to defend Trump and accused Newsom of misrepresenting his post. One wrote, “More lies by Gavin Newsom. This quote of his was in relation to the fake, racist, and un-American Juneteenth holiday.” Another said, “I know this is hard for someone as privileged as you to understand Gavin, but some of us would like to be working today.”

Others chimed in: “No, he thinks fake holidays like Juneteenth is a joke. So do I,” and “I am working today. Farmers don’t get days off. Plants don’t care about your holidays. A day off today is more work tomorrow.”

Some even pointed to the timing: “Show me where it says today,” one remarked, while another argued, “He wrote this post on Juneteenth not Labor Day.”

Despite the backlash, Trump has continued issuing traditional proclamations. In February 2025, he called on officials to honor Black History Month, and for Labor Day this year, he shared a graphic on Truth Social reading, “Celebrating 250 years of the American Worker. Happy Labor Day!”

Newsom, meanwhile, has been publicly criticizing Trump for weeks, questioning both his health and his leadership.
