Malcolm Butler charged with DUI after refusing to take tests and telling cops 'just take me to jail'
RHODE ISLAND, NEW ENGLAND: Former NFL star Malcolm Butler was taken into custody over drunk driving in Rhode Island. Butler was arrested by a patrolman who noticed a vehicle was blocking traffic.
A white Mercedes Benz stopped and blocked traffic on the road, said the patrolman as reported by WBZ-TV.
Malcolm Butler refused to take sobriety tests
On questioning, cops found that the driver was an ex-New England Patriots cornerback. As per reports, he was having a "strong odor of alcoholic beverage" coming off his breath.
The police documents mention Butler was also "sweating profusely" and had "extremely slurred and delayed speech along with severely bloodshot watery eyes.”
The officer asked Butler if was under the influence, the former star responded, “Just take me to jail.” The outlet reported that Butler had refused sobriety tests and was arrested before his car was towed away. The NFL star refused to take a breathalyzer test.
Butler is scheduled to appear in court on March 28, but his attorney claimed that they have filed a motion to dismiss or suppress the charge, reported DailyMail. “I think when they stopped him he wasn't driving,” John Harwood said. “He was off the road, and that he wasn't driving tells me at least he was being responsible,” he added.
Butler announced his retirement nearly a week before after appearing in seven seasons in the league.
