Nicole Richie opens up about 2005 feud with Paris Hilton
Today, Nicole Richie and Paris Hilton share a close connection that they describe as more of a sisterhood than a typical friendship, having been in each other’s lives since childhood.
Richie and Hilton, both 43, stopped being friends for a time while filming their hit reality show 'The Simple Life' in 2005.
"I think anytime you are separated from your loved ones, it's not the best moments," Richie told People.
The duo recently reunited for a new Peacock series, 'Paris & Nicole: The Encore'.
Taking a look back at their relationship in an interview with the publication, Richie said, “Paris and I have more of a sisterhood than I would say, a standard friendship."
"We’ve been in each other’s lives for as long as I can remember, since we were 2. So this is just, it’s life," she added.
Hilton shared similar sentiments, “I just feel so lucky just to have a lifelong friendship like we have — a friendship that’s longer than most marriages."
"We've just been through everything together in life since we were little babies," she continued.
“When you have a friendship that's gone on this long, you do see each other through all stages of life, and we've seen each other through high school and just every stage of life. Motherhood is yet another stage," Richie expressed.
Paris Hilton recalls media's role in her rift from Nicole Richie
Nicole Richie and Paris Hilton recently discussed their 2005 feud during a joint appearance on the 'Call Her Daddy' podcast. Hilton suggested that the media played a significant role in their falling out.
“Back then, the media was just so toxic and they loved starting feuds between people because, obviously, that sold tabloids,” Hilton claimed, as reported by Page Six.
“So it was mostly the media just spinning things and creating drama that didn’t exist, which was normal in the 2000s. They did it with everyone,” she added.
Richie shared her perspective, alleging “nothing really happened” between them but acknowledging that the lack of communication tools at the time allowed hearsay to create a wedge.
“We didn’t have the communication skills we have right now to have check-ins, which is so important,” she said, reflecting on their younger selves.

For Nicole Richie, their temporary fallout serves as a reminder of the importance of communication in any relationship.
“It makes me sad to think about a time without my friend,” she said. “I think it has really helped me [with] communicating at this stage in my life.”
She added, “With all relationships, it’s so important to have check-ins and to be honest and real and, you know, tender with the people that you love the most.”
