Beverly Johnson admits she survived on diet of cocaine and two eggs a week in the 1970s
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Yesteryear’s supermodel Beverly Johnson recently opened up about surviving on just a bowl of rice, two eggs, and cocaine in her pursuit to become “chiseled to the bone.”
During a recent interview with Page Six, the 71-year-old model opened up about her struggle to achieve the figure deemed perfect in the modeling industry.
During her formative years as a supermodel in the 1970s, Johnson admits taking cocaine after industry insiders encouraged her to try the drug to achieve the desired figure.
‘We didn’t know cocaine was addictive’
Johnson, who is celebrating the 50th anniversary of becoming the first Black woman to grace the Vogue cover, recently shared with the outlet, “We were led to believe that cocaine was not addictive,” before emphasizing, “We didn’t know cocaine was addictive.”
Johnson continued, “Everyone used drugs back in the day but that particular drug for models was used because we did not eat.”
The ‘Beverly’s Full House’ star then continued to share her diet during the 1970’s, saying, “I remember eating two eggs and a bowl of brown rice a week. I would be shaking in a cab, and I would say pull over because I have to get a bag of M&Ms.”
“I would just stop and get the shakes,” added Johnson, before sharing, “We did not eat, and every time you came to work they would say, ‘Yes! Chisel to the bone girl. Yes,’ like congratulating you.”
“Nobody really told you the truth,” claimed the supermodel.
However, her mother made her see the reality of her situation. Johnson shared that one day her mother made her leave the bathtub and told her to look in “a three-way mirror.”
That was the wake-up call she desperately needed as Johnson admits, “It was the first time I saw my bones looking back at me,” before adding, “It was a major wake up call for me.”
After that she has been able to come out of the addiction and has been sober for 50 years.
