NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: Republican White House hopeful Nikki Haley claimed in a recent interview that former President Donald Trump's new trade and tariff plan would cost Americans $2,600 per year, reported Daily Mail.

In an exclusive interview with CNBC's 'Squawk Box' on Monday, January 29, the former South Carolina Governor slammed the Republican frontrunner's plan to put a 10% tariff on all imported goods.

"What Donald Trump's about to do is he's going to raise every household's expenses by $2,600 a year," Haley said.

"This is a man who now wants to go and put 10 percent tariffs across the board, raising taxes on every single American. Think about that for a second," she added.

Haley has strengthened her criticisms against Trump ahead of the primary in her home state, South Carolina, on February 24.

According to opinion polls analysis by FiveThirtyEight, she is trailing behind the ex-President, who has already established himself as the clear frontrunner following his decisive victories in Iowa and New Hampshire.

Despite losing at the Granite State's primary, the former UN Ambassador decided to continue in the race, which has narrowed into a Trump vs Haley showdown after Florida Governor Ron Desantis suspended his campaign.

Nikki Haley asserts families will struggle to afford rise in cost

Haley brought attention to the impact of Trump's tax plans on American families.

"It's going to raise the cost of anything from baby strollers to appliances under Donald Trump," she said. "Middle-class families can't afford that."

According to a report by The Washington Post, besides the 10% tariff, Trump reportedly had private discussions about implementing a massive 60% tariff for imports from China.

The ex-President proposed employing tariffs could compel auto companies to produce their vehicles within the United States.
